I forgot how awesome this is
2008-09-19, 8:53 AM #1
So earlier I was sitting on the bus home from work wondering what to do with the rest of my day now that most people I know are back at uni, and I started sifting through games I own in my head.

How the hell did I forget I own Evil Genius? Or better yet, Why the hell was it uninstalled? God how I love that game; a little slow at times yes, but addictive nonetheless. :neckbeard:

Go ahead Massassi, post your games that it seemed that nobody else ever played.

[Also, buy Evil Genius; the demo doesn't do it justice.]
nope.

Evil Genius was awesome after the first patch came out that fixed the issue where your game gets corrupted and there's nothing you can do to prevent it and you have to start over from the beginning. -_-

I like the Thief game series. Also, Persona 3 FES is pretty much A-Mazing.

Thief is classic. Aside from Splinter Cell and maybe a few others, the Thief series is the only series to properly implement sneaking.

I still need to complete Evil Genius.

And Knights of the Old Republic.

And actually play Homeworld 2.

I still think JK is one of the greatest games ever. The level design just blows my mind. It's better than most of the best stuff in games today.

:/

I never considered JK's levels to be especially well designed. Heck, I still to this day don't believe its deserving of the praise it sometime recieves. I just attribute its success to a fun storyline, decent gameplay and STARWARS.

But. Today's level design is pretty lacking and brainless.

When it comes to good level design these days, Valve is first to come to mind. If it comes to worst... I don't know, too many to name... Ravensoft?

Alls I know is as a kid back in 97 playing the JK demo, levels one and two were a *****. I still appreciate them to this day, they're probably some of the better levels in that game.

A game I frequently replay that no one seems to like much is Omikron: The Nomad Soul. Also the Way of the Samurai series for PS2 is short but good.

Well, first off cut it some 1997 slack. The levels were unavoidably linear but largely had very cool puzzles (valley descent anyone?)... The puzzles in Nar utilized industrial machinery that, for 1997's technology, was reasonably believable. It wasn't like JO where, in Nar, you had huge rooms filled with boxes and NO WAY TO GET THE BOXES IN OR OUT. Remember bottomless rooms filled with boxes? Yeah, what the hell...

Unlike JO and JA, you didn't have random crazy nonsenical levels with stormtroopers on random ledges with no possible way for them to get there. I mean, maybe a in a few places, but nothing ridiculous like the Doomgiver comm puzzle.

I'd have to play through it again to get a better perspective. But when I last played through it (2002ish?) I remember realizing how well designed some of the levels were.

I dunno, the levels just... felt right. They felt like Star Wars. More specifically, they felt like expanded universe Star Wars... whatever that means.

Most of my more obscure games were back in the DOS days. Jill of the Jungle, Hocus Pocus, Jazz Jackrabbit, Duke Nukem (the original, seemingly nobody had ever heard of it until 3D came out), Heart Light, Epic Pinball, etc.

I'd say MotS.

Both JK and MotS give me that special feeling when I play them, it's not just nostalgia... these games have a certain unique feel to them. And the excellent level design was already the strongest feature of Dark Forces, which had levels that were so well thought out and made total sense in ways that very few newer games seem to do. I especially loved the last few levels where you smuggle yourself on board the Arc Hammer in a cargo container :) Nar Shaddaa was awesome too. I'm not able to run DF on XP though, with sound that is.

Oh man! Evil Genius! Yes!

Is there ever going to be an Evil Genius 2? I mean, that game was such an awesome idea, but a bit buggy and in need of various little tweaks. I would happily give up a limb for a sequel to that game.

Omikron was a surprisingly good game (and also one single long David Bowie music video, which only adds to the awesomeness). That said, while I enjoyed beating it, I somehow doubt I will ever go back and play it again. It was just so surreal that it almost feels better as a half forgotten memory.

As for JK. I replayed the first bit of JK not long ago, and was floored by Nar Shaddaa. I allways remembered how BIG and conplex Nar Shadaa felt, but going through it again I suddenly started to SEE thing. Things like blast deflectors and landing areas. I realized that you spend a significant amount of time fighting around this one ship in dock, then entering the cargo hold and getting back out again, and it all made scene. Not only was the level design good, it had a sort of master plan behind it.

do you realize how long it took me to figure out that that one part in The Lost Disk was a ship docked to a station?

Civ II is brilliant, and I wish I could run it on my Powerbook. Errr... besides SS2 and DX I loved the original PC release of Crimson Skies for pure fun and cheesiness.

Exactly. I couldn't believe how cool that was the first time I played the game. They don't make levels like that anymore. Another awesome part is where you need to make a jump onto some kind of large rotating container. You need to time it well, then walk up to the top, and down the other side at the right moment. Meanwhile you're being attacked by stormtroopers with raildetonators. So cool. This is not in Nar Shaddaa by the way, it's one of the last levels of the game, somewhere in the Valley Tower.

A game I played that seemed like no one else did would have to be Oni. I had a lot of fun with that game. Too bad it doesn't like my video card :(

And of course JK and MoTS. Always a good time.

I think I still have Oni installed on my laptop. It was actually a lot of fun. I can't count the number of times I played through that.

I still play old PS1 games on my PS2. Perhaps its me, but playing Worms, Gran Turismo 2 and Smackdown 2 tend to be more fun after all these years :)
I don't get so much time to play games on PC and Consoles so they don't actully bore me as much as they used to. Thats whats good about having a weekday job :).
