Honestly, I had the exact same experience with pre-ordering Warhammer Online at Gamestop.

I put my pre-order in, looked at the reciept and said "Where do I get the code for the open beta and headstart?". They told me it was too late.

So I went home, got on Amazon.com and ordered it for less with free shipping and got my codes in the email.

It's not a multiplayer game. The more players in the "beta" the better.

Gamespot is only good for browsing aisles contemplating what games to get. To get in the buying mindset, atleast for me. Actually buying from there, no.

Honestly, the used copies of games go for such unexpectedly high prices. You can essentially get a brand, new copy for like $3 more. I know they turn a good profit by buying used copies for little and charging much for resale, but there doesn't seem to be any quality control over used products. Broken discs, wrong game boxes, dirty games.

I'll stick with online when it comes to purchasing.

The only thing I've ever bought from gamestop are xbox controllers, and that's only because I could get them 50% off. For games, I'll stick to Hastings or online.

I'm just not willing to pay $20 for a used game when I can get it for the same price no more than 2 blocks away at a different store.

That's wrong. It's $5 less :p

Although, for the most part, when it comes to newer or popular titles you're right, you can sometimes find gems in there. You'll find fairly rare games for cheap, or run into some good deals (buy 2 get 1 was this last weekend, which can be really worth it. Only on used games.)

Also, for people who do shop there, demand to see the backs of any used game you're gonna buy before you buy it. Keep your ****ING RECEIPTS. Because if it's used (I wouldn't buy a new game there to save my life--no chance of getting your money back after the purchase is done) then you can get your money back in 7 days (though our managers don't like us to tell people that) and you can return it within 30 days to trade it for the same game. Also, if you argue, chances are you can get your way (like sit there and ***** and complain and threaten to take your business elsewhere. Only if you're talking to a manager though and don't expect it to happen more than once.)

EDIT: I will say one thing though--their reserve system is pretty much the entire reason that I think they still exist. It's an excellent system and basically guarantees that they're not gonna run out before you get your copy (unless the part timers are :hurr:). Other than that it's pretty trash.

Unless you're trying to get a rare game, I don't see why you would buy at Gamestop. They never have any decent deals for their new releases. At Circuit City, Target, and Best Buy sometimes they'll have sales or $10 gift card upon purchase of certain new releases. Amazon has some good deals at times too. I remember purchasing Call of Duty 4 on Black Friday for $45 last year. Once a year, Toys R Us usually has a nice buy 2 and get a 3rd game free sale in October, November, or December.

occasionally you can find decent prices on older used games...

i just go to the local shops if i want to look for used games in an actual shop... dirt cheap, they carry stuff other than games (movies, music, books, etc..), and a couple of the shops i personally know the guys who own the place

Really? Because I've heard some terrible stories of Gamestop screwing up pre-ordering. Although those could isolated cases or based on incompetent few employees, but still bad stories.

Someone here didn't get their WAR collector's edition in--we just ordered it from another store and had it taken care of.

That's about the worst I've seen though.

Very, very rarely, and even then it's usually cheaper to e-bay it.

Because after all, why bother checking the discs before you sell them if you can just rely on the customer to do it for you?

I highly doubt that, seeing as the profit margin for new games is ridiculously low. And there is NO guarantees unless it's a high-high profile game. Not to mention they'll often sell the game to people who walk in even though they're reserved (happened here with GTA4 and Super Smash Bros Brawl), and they'll even yoink your reserve if you don't pick it up in a stupidly short amount of time. Because, you know, it's not like you PAID THEM to hold onto it.
2008-09-29, 6:58 PM #31
Their employees are pretty nerdy, thus not good with people in my experience.

O_o. As far as I know we don't do preorders on systems.

But yeah, I've only been working there a few months. You gotta remember--the people who work there really don't give a ****. They get paid minimum wage, they get no benefits, and they deal with angry customers all day.

Originally posted by Cool Matty:

Sometimes, but it's also guaranteed. And it's not as rare as you'd think, honestly. It may be harder to find, but they're there.

Besides, who wants to pay 5 dollars or more shipping on a 2 dollar game.
Because after all, why bother checking the discs before you sell them if you can just rely on the customer to do it for you?
Thing is, we do check the discs most of the time, but sometimes we don't, or we only have one copy so the point is moot. We're supposed to keep defective rates low, so it's easier on the store if you throw the game at the customer, tell them to bring it back in 7-30 days w/ receipt, and then deal with the bull**** thereafter than it is to defect a game which who knows if it will work (seen games with one cosmetic scratch be totally FUBAR'd and seen games white with scratches play flawlessly.)

Welcome to the world of corporate gamesales and loss prevention :suicide:

Depends on the store, honestly, and the people working there. We don't sell reserves until 4 days after the game comes out. Yes, you may PAY us to hold on to a copy (though technically we profit none off of it--it's just going towards the game), but you can get your money back if some dumbass does sell your copy. Also, the amount of extra games we get is based on reserves, so that factors into the amount of copies we get in too.

And the reserves get people in the store. They get people looking around, and a few people go "Hey, kingdom hearts for 8 bucks! My game's ****ed and I want to play it again". Gamestop nets a few hundred more dollars. I'm not saying profit-wise, it's obvious that their main attraction there is used games/systems, I'm talking about how it ropes the customer in to coming into the store multiple times.

Also, I do try to help people out, and be a good salesman. I don't tell them to buy the ****ing 20 dollar cheaper used 360, I tell them to get the arcade at least. I only sell subs to people who would actually benefit from it (if you have 150 dollars worth of trade ins/used games then there's no reason not to do it--it will be absolutely free. People don't seem to grasp the concept of free discounts though), and I point them to best buy if they want computer games or the local shops if they want SNES/PSX games. I've met the hardcore dedicated salesmen, I've seen the stupid "lolwut" nerds, and I realize that's the kind of **** people hate.

To be honest, our store's probably one of the better stores around, but that's not saying much. It's still gamestop.

Actually, to be technical about it, gamestop didn't take funcoland--Babbages did. And back then they weren't that bad. Then they bought funcoland, wondered "Should we call ourselves Funcoland or Babbages", and decided on...gamestop.
