Xbox 360 - Standing up or lying down?
2008-09-29, 2:03 PM #1
Okay, so I've had my Xbox for months now and I've always had it standing up purely because that's how it looks in the picture on the box. Is it better to have it lying down, is a disk less likely to be scratched? How do you guys orientate your Xbox?

I have it lying down, no chance for it to fall over

Standing up like the glorious white erection of male gaming that it is.

The only system I've oriented vertical was the Wii, because it's slot loaded.

It just doesn't seem intelligent to stick anything that is still tray loaded in a vertical orientation.

It looks better stood up, but for air venting and not-falling-down reasons I have mine lying down.

Lying down, for the same reasons as Martyn and also because I don't have a vertical space for it in my TV stand.

Mine is laying down simply because of where I have it. It's actually sitting on the under-shelf of a coffee table. It doesn't fit standing up.

Mine's lying down.

Your mother may be standing up when she's with you but with when she's with me, she's lying down :)

Lying down, because standing up is unholy and an affront to God. People these days...

I would guess that lying down is the best, just make sure its in an area where the system has room to "breathe"

Standing up gives you more of a chance to move the system, and when that sucker moves, any disc inside gets instant, full-ring scratches. I work in a CD store with a buffer and people bring in their circle-scratched 360 games all the time,so definitely don't move it while its on, in any case.

Mine is laying down cause that's the only way I can fit it in my stand. Didn't really help it from scratching disks though, accidentally yanked the sucker out of the stand once, the wires caught it but it was hanging sideways out the front, and put a nice ring in my CoD4 disk. Luckily it was on the very edge so the game still plays fine.

Lying down for heat/stability/tray reasons.

Standing up is stupid. If it gets bumped in the slightest say hello to a nice circular scratch around your disk.

Exactly.

Did you know:

When you rotate and Xbox 360 from the lying down position to the standing up position and vice-versa, the led position around the power button for player 1 changes position as well? In either position, player 1 is always top left.

Just don't try this with a disk in the tray.

Does this include upside-down, standing and laying?

Unfortunately no, just the two positions with little rubber feet, So standing up (with the HDD at the top) and on it's side with the CD drive above the MU's.

As far as I know it doesn't use an accelerometer to do this (like cellphones and cameras do to properly orient screens when the device is rotated). It uses a small module that has a ball bearing that rolls. Because of that, I could see it not registering properly if you put it upside down. It'd be interesting to see what happens, though.

missionary

easier to leave games on it

The damn thing should have been a sphere. No orientation problems, and it justifies the 360 in the title....

I don't have one, but my bro has his standing.

... I have my PS3 laying down ;)

Okay, follow-up question. Do you guys have any stuff on top of your XBox? I have a pretty light-weight TV, I'm wondering if I could simply place it on top of the Xbox without damaging it? Do you any of you guys have any stuff on top of it?

Well it is metal but I still wouldn't chance it. Plus, the 360's top when laid down isn't exactly flat.
2008-10-02, 6:19 AM #29
I used to have a hefty pile of books on mine when it was lying down, didn't have any problems.

It's standing up now because it's on my desk.

Well, there are vents on top, I wouldn't want to block those given how prone to overheating the 360 is.

I didn't get out the level or anything, but it looks pretty flat to me, CM.
2008-10-02, 2:47 PM #31
It's visibly curved, and I didn't block the vents.

Leave it to Mort to use 'orientate' seriously in a sentence.

Or you could just built a shelf for it. It would cost you like 2 bucks in scraps at home depot or something. Even if it is "safe" I wouldn't feel comfortable putting a TV on the xbox.

My PS3 is curved, so no, nothing on it.

Xbox? Standing up, remember? :P
