Help me upgrade my old decrepit machine!
2008-10-04, 8:12 PM #1
Right now my machine is:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (1.8ghz)
1 gb RAM

I'm getting an 8800GT (from yoshi). I figure thats a decent start.

There's only one socket 939 chip available on new egg... So that was an easy choice >_> For the Ram though. Should i Just get 1gb more? If so, 2 sticks or 1? Or would it be worth it to just get the most ram my machine could support.

I don't really want to spend too much on an upgrade, but if you can find me a new motherboard and even quicker CPU for a reasonable price I'd be interested.

Only one more GB. More is useless on your machine. I'm only running two, with a similar set up. Don't forget to overclock your CPU when you get it.

When I saw the thread title I wondered if you were as bad off as I am. I have an A64 3500+ and 2 GB of RAM with a 7950 GT. I thought a few times about a new CPU but the choices are so limited with socket 939 and I feel bad sinking money into a rig that I know is so obsolete. What I really need to do is get a new mobo/cpu/ram, but since I hardly PC game anymore it's hard to justify.

I run an AMD 3200+ 939 socket. I upgrade to 2gb of ram a while back and it was totally necessary. drr400 is pretty cheap too.. I'm actually trying to upgrade my 6600gt (agp) but it's getting hard to find them

DDR400? Woah, didn't know people still used DDR1 RAM xD

2GB Minimum, especially if you want to play games (I suggest at least 3 if you plan on playing very new games - like Crysis or something - I ran out of Memory in DX9 mode lol)
2008-10-04, 11:13 PM #6
On this system Crysis isn't even worth playing.
2008-10-06, 10:48 AM #7
yea I doubt i'll be playing cysis any time soon. Probably just going to go with that 939 and a gig of ram

I'm in the same position, with all the new innovations (PCI-E, 64 bit, SLI, SATA, etc.) you have to completely start from scratch rather then swapping out old for new if you're running anything 2004 and older.

I just don't have the money for it right now =/

If you're going to get a new mobo, go Intel. Period.
2008-10-08, 8:53 PM #21
ok a quick glance at newegg shows that going intel is probably going to be about $50 more. maybe?

I mean, the cheapest Core 2 Duo chip newegg has is $120
and if i did that, maybe only get 2gb ram?

Go ahead, if you want to be stuck with like ridiculously slower hardware.
2008-10-09, 8:32 AM #24
Well like, im totally asking for other suggestions but I dont seem to be getting them.

Like I totally dont want a shoddy motherboard like you know? But like I dont wanna spend like $400 on an upgrade.

edit - when i get back from queens ill post a list of intel hardware to see what you guy sthink :P

hokay intel time:

the cheap route:

(1gb ram would eventually be upgraded)

or the expensiveish route;

Seriously, please get 2 GB. 2 GB should be the minimum these days. It costs what, $25 more? You will waste far more than $25 worth of time waiting on the machine that you crippled by cheaping out on the ram.

I'm going to order these parts today. Might buy 4gb ram now, but I guess that depends on how much money i have:ninja:

I'm going to climb through the internet and murder you for ordering 4 GB of RAM...because your fat.

Don't understand why everyone is so anti AMD all the sudden. Yeah, Core 2 Duo is faster, but AMD is the cheaper route and its not like you see that much of a performance difference. I know guys running AMD systems that are running latest games on highest setting without problems.
