Playstation 2 Meets Projector - Cabling?
2008-10-05, 8:37 PM #1
Today one of my friends gave me their old PS2 to use as a simple DVD player for me to hook up to my projector. Along with it came the cable pictured below. I am currently trying to figure out how to best connect it [and if that might need a new cable].

Acc/to this site:
http://www.us.playstation.com/PS2/Using/GetStarted

The best picture quality comes from a Component AV Cable.

PS2 also states it has stereo sound, and I have an audio-in jack on the projector.

However my knowledge of A/V equipment is decidedly limited, so I'd appreciate a few quick pointers on what goes where and/or which cable to procure.

So far all I've figured out is that the yellow plug goes in the yellow socket ;)

Pardon the picture quality, all I had was my phone. Projector sockets read:
VGA-Out, Audio In, Video, S-vido, VGA-in, DVI-D.

Thanks for any hints.

I guess the absolute best you could do would be component cable for PS2 -> Component to VGA adapter -> VGA port

Although to be honest you're probably better off just sticking with the yellow composite and saving yourself the effort.

Edit: For audio you only have one choice there and that's getting the red/white composite audio to minijack adapter. There's tons, they're cheap, and there's no quality loss. The only other choice the PS2 offers is optical out, but you need a receiver that supports it.

CM is right. You need a stereo RCA audio jack (red/white from ps2) to 3.5mm stereo audio, which can be found at basically any dollar store (for like, a dollar, with no loss in quality). Even if you used a component to VGA soltution you gain little to no picture quality.

Drunk post, sorry, but it's the truth, and I hope it helps/.

without buying a component to vga converter best you can do from a PS2 is get an s-video cable

and getting a minijack converter as mentioned

If it's a model predating SCPH-50000 it won't support progressive scan output for DVDs, which means you won't get any appreciable image quality improvement beyond that of S-Video. But even if it does support progressive scan, a VGA box will probably be more expensive than a brand new DVD player with a DVI or VGA output.

You can pick up a S-Video cable for a few bucks at Gamestop.

or a player with HDMI output with a HDMI-DVI cable

what are the specs on this projector... looking at the inputs i suspect it's intended purpose leans more toward office presentations

If your only using it as a DVD player and not to play games... just go to walmart or BJ's and buy a DVD player for $20..

I'm PRETTY sure S-video is better than componant.

Plus it's only 1 cable for sound and video.

s-video is not better than component

component

s-video
[http://www.home-theater-accessories-resource.com/Images/Pictures/s-video%20cable.jpg]

s-video can only carry a 480i signal... component can carry 480i 480p 720p 1080i and if the devices support it 1080p

and the only one that is one cable for audio and video (not counting coax connection) is HDMI and to get audio with the video you need to have a device that accepts HDMI... the HDMI-DVI cable i mentioned earlier only carries a video signal

actually there is a noticeable difference s-video has less color bleeding and better contrast and with a projector you'd expect him to be projecting to a screen size where one would easily notice the difference

It's probably much cheaper to get the stereo jack. Lucky me, I've got at least 20. With all my cables, I can hook myself up to god if I had to. xD

S-Video doesn't carry audio.

I think I got componant mixed up with composite.

It's sounding like the best option at this point, then, is to get the PS2 s-video cable?

I picked up the stereo adapter at Radio Shack yesterday for a couple bucks.
