i've got this LCD monitor i've had for just about a year now, and all of a sudden today, i notice a white pixel toward the top of my screen surrounded by a red ring.

wtf is this? is it a dead pixel? or is it something else? should i call the manufacturer or what?

did a printscreen and it showed up on there, so i guess you can see what i'm seeing.

though if it was a dead pixel i dont understand why it would show up on a print screen.

If it's a dead pixel, it won't show up on a printscreen.

Have tried changing your background to anything else.

Did you check what wallpaper file you had selected?

Did you peer into the red circle?

Did someone peer out of it?

Is it that time of the month?

Did you let a naked JediKirby have his way with your screen?

well, i know its not an issue with my wallpaper, because it appears on any program i'm running in the exact same position. in firefox its right on the tab bar, and so on and so forth.

perhaps somethng to do with the graphics card?

really very perplexing.

Maybe a video card problem? Do you have one you can swap out, just to test?

If your mobo was onboard graphics, I'd give that a plug and see if it's still there. If it is.. try a new VGA cable perhaps?
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

If it's the VGA cable it still wouldn't show up in a print screen.

dead pixels are like blue or white on a black image

It's a "stuck" pixel. I have a small blue one on the bottom of my screen (might be dead, it's very hard to see so it doesn't bother me none). My dad has a red one and a green one on his monitor.

There's a chance you can fix stuck pixels. "Dead" pixels are, from what I know, black or white. I can't remember which.

Look it up on google. You might find a solution. My friend gently massaged is monitor with a soft cloth and his pixels went away, then ran a small java script thing he found on google to fix the others. They're all gone now :)

Oh yeah, has nothing to do with your VGA, Video Card, Desktop Background or any of that other stuff. It's definitely a pixel.

Um, please explain how he was able to printscreen his dead pixel.

I would do what others have said, to try another video card, if you have one.

I have a small blue dead pixel near the bottom center of my monitor. Thankfully it's so small that I didn't even notice it majority of the time so it's not exactly something I would fuss over enough to take it to a shop and have it fixed.

Guys, it's not a freakin stuck pixel. If he can screenshot it, it is something on the software level.
2008-10-08, 12:05 PM #16
one thing to note (i havent tried anything yet as i am not at home at the moment to try anything) is that the red circle you guys see in the picture is not one i drew around the pixel. it appears concurrent with the white pixel.

if that helps anyone narrow anything down, cool.

This is a long shot, but try taking your video card out an putting it back in.

I assume you have already restarted your computer?

When does it show up when you reboot? Is it always visible or only when in windows? At what point during bootup does it appear?
2008-10-08, 12:23 PM #19
Yeah your right. I mean a screen shot should not capture a dead pixel. A dead pixel would be a problem with the monitor but the screen shot would still get the full image.

As already said over and over, its not the screen. Chances are its the graphics card, not sure how it manages to do that. Make sure its not getting too hot, I overheated one of my old cards overclocking it and the first thing I saw was wierd pixels on the screen.

Thing is, I don't think you could screenshot visual artifacts from the video card either.

What happens when you change resolution?
2008-10-08, 7:03 PM #24
well, rebooting fixed it but damned if i know what caused it. no one has an idea?

I don't know about you but I read lots of posted ideas. The most sensical had to do with an artifact created by your graphics card. :eng101:

I can't actually see it for some reason. But from reading the comments, I may have seen this before. Try installing the latest drivers for your video card. If that doesn't fix it, play with different resolutions and see if it moves with it.

gammasts, he fixed it with a reboot.

It was probably an artifact from GDI rendering, or something from your video card.

Odd.

Well now you know what a stuck pixel looks like. If you can't print screen it - then you know what it is ;)
