LucasArts has a catalog of games called the "Jedi Knight series" that show how lightsaber combat can work. And seeing how Force Unleashed is suppose to be a high-profile game, it would stupid to ignore what is successful from experience. KotOR is a RPG game, and one that gets its RPG elements right. FU is an action game that has questionable action gameplay.

I assume the reason why the lightsaber is more of a LIGHT BAT is because LucasArts wanted to show the much-hyped physics engine. If corpses just drop, that's not cool enough; it needs to fly in air to show off the "biomechanical AI" or whatever.

But that's just a big assumption. If that is actually true, I think someone needs to go up to LucasArt's developers and SLAP THEM IN THE FACE.

JO/JA did it right. If I jump at somebody in those games I can be relatively certain that I'm going to hurt them. In TFU, I just land nearby and have to reorient myself in order to actually hit them with the sword. And if I just run up to them I get shot because the guy won't block shots unless he's standing still holding a block button

And there it is. Why did people expect this to be the next Jedi Knight?

Huh? No one expected it be the next Jedi Knight. People expected the lightsaber combat to be "fun."

Maybe its only in the PSP, or I got the name wrong but I'm pretty sure I dont. You pick the guy up and tap whatever button and the objects and enemies around the room go flying into him. Besides force push its probably my favorite power in the game.

It's also in the Wii version. I use it almost exclusively. It's also great to rip everything apart in your search for holocrons.

I like the Wii version. It has a ****ty camera and worse graphics but it's still fun to play.

Whenever people discuss what combat should have been like in TFU, they only ever mention JO/JA.

I actually did not have a problem with the combo system, though I probably would hate it if I had the Wii version. I understand that they didn't want melee combat to be as stupidly easy as it logically should be just for the sake of gameplay.

Why wouldn't they?

Honestly, if they made the lightsaber feel like it is cutting through enemies instead of batting them silly, that simple change would make the combat 100% better.

I'm saying they only use JO/JA as a reference of what they wanted combat to be. No other games.

Don't know what game you were playing but I found the autoblock feature to be very useful. Often times, enemies would kill themselves when I drew in at close range to chop at them. Especially those grey/black clothed troopers with the (presumably) repeaters that shot blue lasers rapidly. Granted it didn't always deflect back -at- them unless you hit the block button, but it defenitely helped out.

I'd have to say my biggest gripes about the game were the "cheap" style of some of the bosses. For example when your fighting two rancors, and the camera angle gets you trapped in a corner, then you are just nonstop slammed without the ability to get on your feet until you die. Another thing was the "interactive" cutscenes. I found myself just trying to focus on the next combo rather then watching him actually do some cool things. It was ok for minibosses, but the emperor fight really had me pissed for awhile, due to the fact that if you screw up, they get a substantial amount of health again. I also found the jedi master on fellucia to be extremely annoying with that screaming power. I muted my PSP for that fight.

The concept of being a force heavy badass was actually very entertaining for me. I thought leaning away from another lucas arts "chop em' up" was nice. Replay value is decent in my opinion, considering the replay story mode with your preexisting force powers bit, thus being able to rape through it and have fun screwing around with powers you neglected the first time around. Also the whole holocron bit proves to be a good replay benefit for us OCD players who like to get everything 100%.

For me TFU felt more like what jedi power battles SHOULD have been.

Now that's more like it, and I actually loved Jedi Power Battles.

The Lightsaber will 1 hit kill weak stuff like stormtroopers and rebel soldiers (and jawas but the sith punt on a jawa is just awesome)

But its crap against most other stuff (especially the annoying new types of stormtrooper. Its more fun to throw **** at people, fry them, push them or grip them and see what hideous way they can be killed.

Force repulse is awesome for boss fights against jedi,or for general carnage.

Force push at max can knock a darktrooper over. If spammed slightly.

Honestly I rarely used any combos.

Am I the only one who found the combos useful =_= maybe I just suck at playing the game "right" but I basically just dashed at enemies and did three slashes + lightning or push or I did the little jump up / slash down shockwave thing. Plus the previously mentioned explosive lightning + push combo. I pretty much never used the "A" block in the entire game. I just killed everyone and then picked up health.

I also found Grip + Lightsaber Impale at high levels to be really useful in killing off those annoying flying Stormtroopers.

Pummel was the most awesome thing ever with multiple enemies flying into each other.

I dunno, I used my saber a lot ... I pretty much spammed push and lightning until I got in range to dash in then I spammed saber combos <_< For boss fights (especially against Jedi) the three slash + lightning combo was REALLY useful since even tho they blocked the saber strike the lightning charge still damaged them.

(This is on the Wii version, of which I thought the saber controls were actually fairly good in that they werent just "repeatedly flick wrist" ... if you wanted to you could actually swing out strokes in the desired directions and get the combos you want)
