One ear earphones?
2008-10-09, 8:34 AM #1
I tried searching but its hard to come up with anything -

Does anyone know of earphones that come with only one thingy?
I almost never wear both, so I always have one dangling that gets in the way, and then earing a background noise of the difference between L and R is kind of annoying.

(I'm usually doing stuff where I need to hear when listening to my music )

solution, cut the second one off :colbert:

Well I'm looking for one that would play both L and R.

Most mp3 players have an equaliser etc, just get it to play out of one - voila, MONO!
nope.

Do they? I swear when I listen to (my iPod) that I hear something different out of the dangling headphone. *shrugs* I guess it's not that big a of a deal, I'll just cut it, yea. Doesn't sound like I'm missing something.

Because you still have your ipod on stereo sound, switch it to mono, and problem solved.

How the hell do I do that?
2008-10-09, 9:01 AM #8
Pretty sure its in the EQ presets in your ipod. Could be wrong though? Check the options menus.

try a search for a mono headphone?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/536654-REG/Beyerdynamic_471402_DT_1S_32_0_8m_Single_Ear_Headphone.html#

Not sure if 3.5mm is the typical headphone jack or not.

Damn expensive. Thanks though, mono head phone searches better than saying one ear peice head phone.

Would a cell phone headset work? You may have to get a special plug to use the smaller jack, though.

You could always just buy a tiny little stereo to mono jack adapter thing at radioshack.

nope.

Right on, great stuff. Thanks.

Only listening to one speaker?

You must listen to like some really ****ty rap or something.

Let me inform you; Listening to one half of a recording is the same as buying a full screen DVD instead of a Widescreen DVD. You're effectively negating hours of editing an engineer put into any particular track.

Seriously.

It's like drinking beer and then spitting it out before swallowing.

That won't work. It will only make the connection on one channel.

You can't physically combine the channels. They need to be actually downmixed.

Hmm this seems to be a bigger problem than I thought lol.

Rob, yea, only one. I hate not hearing what is going on around me. I get all paranoid. And FYI I listen to rock :)

I'm thinking maybe a bluetooth thing seems to be the best option..hmm

Rock, or mall metal?

Either way a **** ton of work goes into those tracks. You need to use both ears.

Here is a trick. You'll just have to trust me. I know it sounds crazy but..

All you have to do is turn the ****ing volume down.

That's what I thought but it was worth a shot. :P
nope.

actually, you can physically combine channels. just not in the actual output. once the 1/8 TRS jack is connected, you just gotta combine both channels to a single lead and make a common ground. requires a bit of soldering, but some TRS 1/8 to mono 1/4 jack cables exist. and they do work. very useful for my lessons. from the mp3 player to the amp without losing both channels.

not really useful for your situation. just felt like saying Emon was wrong. ;)

That's a terrible idea. You'll be shorting one channel against the other. It can potentially damage the source amplifier. Not to mention that any sounds that occur on both channels but phase shifted will result in partial cancellation and affect the volume of certain sounds. It won't be true mono. It may not be noticeable but the potential damage is more than enough reason to not do it.

Except that when we're talking in mW's of power coming from the source, it really doesn't matter.

for bigger wattages there's mono blend. if we were shorting straight from the Power Amp i understand the issues. but from the preamp it's pretty much laughable.

My dad has only had hearing in one ear since he was born. He still listens to music.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

True, but it's worth mentioning so no one gets the idea that it's always safe to do.

I know what he means about wanting to use only one ear. Here at my work I wish I could listen to music but because I have to be alert in case a machine tries to explode or someone is getting sucked inside of it I can't. A Mono headphone would be nice.
