Somehow I got the crazy idea that I would put down some hardwood floor myself.

First image : Hey, this is pretty easy!

Second image : HOLY **** I WAS WRONG.

First image starts off well.

The rest seem to lose alignment and have odd gaps on the sides.

Gaps get covered by trim. :D You actually need gaps to allow for expansion and contraction.

The angle nailer makes it really simple. You just set it against the board and whack it, it's awesome.

Tomorrow, after I clean up, I need to do trim. I've got four different threshold pieces I need, and a whole lot of half-round. The basement door is going to be a problem. :/

trim and baseboard should really be removed before installing any kind of flooring... that way if you have minor gaps the baseboard can cover them up

You laid it the way they say not to. The "railroad track pattern". Other than that...

Your boards are perpendicular to the hallway, rather than running parallel.

I think it looks better that way.

Flooring isnt hard, you just need good tools (specifically a nice saw) to get the pieces cut how you want them.

I just snap them until I finally get one that breaks in the right place. :neckbeard:

Yeah, I had planned to do it the other way, to make it match seamlessly with the dining room. But that would have required me to split several boards, and I would have had to nail most of it by hand. Doing it this way meant no board-splitting, and being able to use the angle nailer for most of the floor. Also, you're supposed to install it perpendicular to the floor joists whenever possible, which I did. And stripping across the floor makes the hall look wider, too.
