First: some sort of Atari thing

processor: around 8 Mhz, if I remember correctly
RAM: most likely 512k
Hard drive: none
floppy drive: 3.5"
Video card: well, the monitor had 256 colours
Sound card: internal speaker (maybe, I'm not even sure it had that)
However, it played MS flight simulator; it was great.

Second:

processor: 486 (around 33 Mhz maybe?)
RAM: 8 MB, later upgraded to 16
Hard drive: not sure, I think 500 megs
video card: none
sound card: sound blaster something
optical drive: 1x CD-ROM drive
floppy drive: 3.5"
monitor: 15"

I know a guy whose first computer was a Commodore 64 (which he had until about 5 years ago) and his second was a 386 (which he still uses).

Brace yourself:

First Machine: AST POS (not sure what AST means, but you can understand pos [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] )

*Pentium 75mhz
*Onboard video.
*No-Name-Brand soundcard (i honestly have no idea what i was. only that it was on of the worst ones on the market at the time).
*3/4gb Hard-drive (yes. 3/4. we later added one that was the size of a small motherboard and held 2gb).
*32mb of RAM.

Second system: First MDG POS (first, because my current computer is the second).

*Intel Celeron 333mhz
*Integrated everything (sound and video).
*10gb HD.
*64mb of RAM.

And though it hasn't been asked for, CURRENT system: Second MDG POS.

*Intel Pentium 3 1Bghz (according to my BIOS).
*ATi Radeon 7500 All in Wonder 64mb (replacing an old no-name-brand card).
*Onboard sound.
*40gb HD
*384mb of RAM (upgraded from 128mb)

My first was a Tandy 1000HX: 4mhz 8088 CPU, 256kb RAM, no HD, 360K 5.25 inch floppy, 16 color video (Tandy lo-res, not EGA), but we only had a monochrome monitor for it.

The second was a Tandy 1000TL/2: 8mhz 80286 CPU, 768kb RAM, DOS 3.3 and Deskmate (Tandy's gui) in ROM for ultra-fast boots, 40mb HD, 360K 5.25" floppy, 760K 3.5" floppy. The same gfx as the HX. Both had hardware support for sound sampling, and three-channel sound. Revolutionary at a time when SoundBlaster's and Adlib's hadn't made their appearance yet. I used to have *GASP* Windows 2.1 running on this one, and eventually *GAASSSPP* Windows 3.0 [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] I remember having to use SETVER to get my old games from the first computer working with the TL/2.

well i did have an amega and a commandore 64, but I thought we were just talking about PC's, because if I go further back I even had ZX Specturms....don't know if you had them in the US, they used tapes to play games and you could program it to display graphs and stuff, like early excel...

Good old Commodore Plus/4 (failed successor to the 64).

1 MHz processor
64kB memory
The amazing software suite with a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and graph software....

Oh, and of course you could write BASIC on it.

Could have a 160kB 5.25" floppy drive, but I never had one...

Then quite a few years later I got a nice 33 MHz 486SX with the amazing 4 MB of memory. Hard drive was 100 MB if I remember correctly I wore that thing out with DOS games.

Of course by the time I was done with that PC, had added a 66 MHz Overdrive processor in there and had it overclocked to 100 MHz, 8 MBs of memory, 2X CD-ROM drive, and an amazing 640 MB hard drive.
