Southern California is burning down again.

I live about perhaps 4-5 mi away from the San Diego/Camp Pendleton (officially "Juliet" fire so I'm to believe) fire.

Traffic Report: You can't go past 76 on College. Oceanside PD will put holes in your tires (and you) if you do.

Some photography (my camera sucks and I have a ridiculously unsteady hand)

Taken from a Chevron station on 76

Looking on to College Blvd (I got there before O'Side PD blockaded it). My mom called me a dork and an idiot for doing this. In retrospect I probably was.

College Blvd. again.
They were diverting traffic on to N. River Rd. I took this on Adams St.

Found a hill to take some nice images.

There are five wildfires in Southern California: This one, two in N. LA, one in Newport Beach (Orange County), and another in San Bernadino.

My prayers go out to the people that have to deal with this stuff on what seems like a yearly basis.

California is so beautiful too.

Holy ****. Where are you at? I used to live off of College closer to Oceanside Blvd. I played soccer at the N River Rd Park.

Which direction is it moving?

Why do people choose to live in such disastrous places?

Hard to say. It was at one point pushing south. Now looks like it's going E. The Santa Anas are supposed to kick it into high gear overnight. So this is gonna **** **** up when that happens. I haven't heard reports of any containment

I don't know..

that is crazy though! Hope your safe.

I was living in Montana when a bunch of random fires broke out there, I couldn't see any of them, but the sky was red, you could smell smoke everywhere, and it was raining ash. That's like 1000x worse though so holy crap.

Why do people live in the south east/gulf coast? Why do people live in hurricane alley?

I live in Phoenix. No quakes, no fires, no tornadoes, no hurricanes, no tidal waves. Just hot. And a few storms.

Anyway, epic pics. I hope you're safe.

That's a huge fire. Hope everything goes okay for the peeps that are there.

I live in the center of Ontario, the closest thing to a natural disaster is cold winter. That and thunderstorms.

Don't take this the wrong way but... for a nasty fire, it's damn pretty.

why is he stupid? I personally wouldn't live in Cali either if I had to deal with my house shaking or burning down every other year. Not to mention I'd have to donate a kidney just to pay my morgage for a month. Real estate over there is rediculous.

It's not like the entire state is a regular safety hazard. Most of the shaking at our house was because the Marines were blowing stuff up, and we never had a fire anywhere near us.

I'm not talking about the entire state. Its just that theres some places that people keep rebuilding, which get trashed again in a year or two. Theres no way to say thats a great idea

Major San Diego County Wildfires that I can remember off the top of my head.

1996: Harmony Grove
2003: Ceder/Paradise
2007: Rancho Bernardo/Poway/Fallbrook
2008: Juliet/Vandegrift (and these were piddly in comparison)

Southern California is predominantly chaparral. Thick brush that covers much of the landscape. In some areas, there hasn't been a fire in half a century thanks to legislatures. This has allowed for A LOT of accumulated dead material to acquire. When it came time to fire, there was A LOT of fuel. And it just so happend to coinside with fierce Santa Anas. The only reason why it's happening somewhat frequently is two fold. 1) Media sensationalism. A goddamn SIX acre fire was made to believe that it was Ceder Fire Part II. 2) Southern California is in a very wicked drought. I'm told that we're going to have to water ration within the next two years. Drought + dry Santa Ana winds + pyromaniacs = large wildfires.

All of that + more people living in homes that are in areas where fires, when started, are completely unstoppable. On top of that, many people don't give a rats *** about defensible space.

California likes to burn. Always has and it always will. People just need to understand that and take what measures they can to reduce the risk of their homes going up in flames.

Personally, I like seeing everything burn because it means big fat pay checks for me. :awesomelon:
