Considering they're extending coverage of XP until like 2014, I would say that Vista would rather be forgotten than considered obsolete.

Vista isn't obsolete.. Windows 7 isn't coming out for a year or two.

No they aren't.

And Windows 7 is on track for a release in 2010.

I was exaggerating.

Um. They've always announced the next windows right after the current one comes out. Vista is 2007; so the next one will be about 2010. That's normal.

Windows 7 is what Vista was supposed to be. It's the original re-write, that they cut all the features out of to make vista.

It's the "seventh" release of the Windows NT line:

1. NT 3.1
2. NT 3.5
3. NT 4
4. Windows 2000
5. Windows XP
6. Windows Vista
7. Windows 7

The server products don't count since they are essentially the same as their consumer counterparts. 2K workstation and server, XP and 2003 Server, Vista and 2008 server.

Actually that's the slashdot reverse engineered makesense explanation.

The official reasoning is here: http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/10/14/why-7.aspx and they use version numbers.

So Windows 6.1 is Windows 7.

NT was completely separate, built from the ground up, for servers and workstations. One of the biggest differences was a kernel that didn't suck. The Wikipedia article on Windows NT has a lot of good information.
