How would you clean this up?

As I was leaving my friend's room I accidentally kicked over a glass of milk that was on the floor (it was dark). Of course, most if it went into a heating/cooling vent. There's a shelf of sorts under the grate that the milk has collected on. The grate seemingly cannot be removed. There are no visible screws, and pulling does nothing (maybe there are screws under the carpet, I don't know). The holes in the grating are about 1 cm wide and 2.5 cm long.

Any ideas for how we can clean this up so the milk doesn't make the room stink? Think of it as a puzzle thread.

Thanks.

Pour a bunch of water down to wash it away!
Or make a long straw and suck it all up

Sadly, those were my two ideas. Thanks for the attempt, though.

Who owns the building? Your friend, your friend's family? A landlord or company, or a university? If it's the latter, consult their maintenance function. If it's the former, I'd say remove some of the carpet and get in there.

A landlord, it's a rented house.

are you able to just pull it outta the ground? i know that my old house had them heaters on the ground and they just slid into a slot on the ground and not screwed in, most likely for just such an occasion.

try prying the grate up from the sides. I'm assuming it's a rectangular grate on the floor with slits and at one end it has that dial that open/closes the slits to allow air to move or not.

Will there be complications if you explain the situation to the landlord with apologies? I'm sure they can figure out how to open the grate.

I don't think it'll matter with the piles of month-old dirty dishes on the counter and the dead skunk in your roommate's closet! But you can burn the house down just to be sure.

Is the grate a grid or slots?

Cause yknow you could always just poke kitchen roll in there and try to absorb it.
nope.

Wait until it dries, then get an ant farm and put it beside the grate. Let the ants out. The ants will find the yummy dried up milk and bring it back to their nest. Once it is all gone, remove the ant farm.

Thank you, ants. Thants.

It was my friend's glass, not mine :argh: If it were mine I would have known it was there.

Thanks for the suggestions, both serious and otherwise. The current solution has been to forget it happened. We'll see how this pans out.

Oh that's going to be naaaasty. I'd go with mb's suggestion and at least saturate it with febreeze.

Or ammonia or something. If it's all metal, you could pour bits of alcohol down there and light it, and see if you can get the whole thing to quickly evaporate.

We once borrowed my cousins Suburban for a couple weeks while they were out of town and we needed a car. I left a gallon of milk in the center console on our way back from the store and forgot about it, and it burst.

It stunk for years.

That grate must come up. Pull harder or pry. Shine a light in it to look for means of removal.

Milk won't magically "evaporate" if you mix it with alcohol and burn it. It'll just burn... which might work, or make it worse.

The absorbent powder would probably work if its still wet.

EWWW! Burnt milk smells terrible (ever cooked with milk and scorched it?)

How much went down the grate? If it wasn't too much, I might let it dry up. Eventually it won't stink...
