LotR: Soundtrack

I noticed a few of you had it on your Christmas lists. Opinions?

I have never before contemplated spending money on a movie soundtrack, but today I went out to buy Return of the King's, and came home with a box-set of all 3 LotR soundtrack CDs.

In 2 words: Spine tingling.

Other great soundtracks:
-A Clockwork Orange (great old synthesizer music, mostly classical themes synthesized)
-Akira (just because of it's strangeness, it is just cool and astounding)
-Blade Runner (one of the best soundtracks ever, even though I don't find it best of Vangelis' works)
-Antarctica (One word: Vangelis)
-Gladiator (simply astounding, I'm not listening it very often but it's astounding and great)

I have all 3 LOTR soundtracks, and I love them.

I might go out and buy Gladiator, because of such high praise from Wolfy.

POTC is pretty good, too.

If you are into game soundtracks, listen to Metal Gear Solid 2's music. Harry Gregson Williams did it (composer that does movies also). His main theme that he created for MGS2 is great.

Snoopfighter2, I'm pretty sure the melody that you are referring to was only used for the LOTR trailer and never appeared in the actual film. Also, it wasn't "ripped off;" it was used by permission.

...unless I'm mistaken and you are actually talking about the techno song that plays during the scene in which Gandalf drops acid. That song, in fact, is ripped off from Requiem for a Dream. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I have all 3 LoTR soundtracks, very good.
Braveheart is also good and so is the Requiem For a Dream Soundtrack (very sad). The Matrix soundtracks are good (the neo-classical stuff, the "mainstream" one is meh).
And of course the Star Wars soundtracks.
But last and not least I got The Definitive Terminator soundtrack...best 80's...synth...EVAR. (Good luck finding one though, hard to come by.) [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I really need to get the LotR soundtrack, I never really thought of that. They should probably be at best buy, right?

I live off of soundtracks, but as they're all (or mostly) broadway soundtracks, I won't bother you with them.

I'd consider these must-buys (biased) :

-Titanic
-Raise the Titanic (old '80s movie. Great score.)
-Star Wars Trilogy (Special Editions, duh)
-LotR Trilogy
-A few Star Trek films (I, II, III, First Contact, etc.)
-Thirteen Days (hadn't heard of Trevor Jones before. Great music.)

And though it's short, the music in the IMAX film "Hail Columbia!" is pretty good.

Ebay is your best bet, and even then they usually are up for around $30 - $40, because they're so rare. I got mine $15 from a guy in Spain off Ebay. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

LotR's soundtrack is amazing. I like it as much as Star Wars. All the themes are memorable like Star Wars. Isengard, Fellowship, Rohan, and Gondor. Of course nothing can match that Imperial March....

Yuck.. How can you compare the two?
I don't know if its the fact that I OD'd on all forms of Star Wars about two years ago or what.. But I really don't like any of Williams music. With the possible exclusion of his work on Schindler's List. It just seems to lack emotion to me.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned yet Hans Zimmers "The Thin Red Line". Amazing stuff.

Edit:I should retract my generalization. I'm listening to "Across the stars" right now. Its emotional. I'm just not a big fan.

We've got the LotR and TTT soundtracks. Yet to get RotK.

Other good soundtracks with excellent scores are:

Braveheart, Titanic and A Beautiful Mind (best by James Horner)

The Thin Red Line, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down (if you like Hans Zimmer)

The Lion King, The Dish, Donnie Darko and Gattaca.

After listening to them for a few days, RotK is the best.

A little more of the Rohan theme would have been nice, but hell there's always the TTT soundtrack for that [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]
