Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO

has been officially confirmed!

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/21/joystiq-live-from-lucasarts-bioware-press-conference/

I can wait! It's being developed by Bioware so you know it will be good!
2008-10-21, 2:42 PM #2
I'd rather have KotOR 3, but the Old Republic era is the only real era in Star Wars that an MMO is good for. The only time when thousands and thousands of Jedi are around.

This will probably be the first MMO that I actually play.

Bleh. MMO.

This was expected but I had a small glimmer of hope for KotOR 3.

I have some hope, because it is being developed by BioWare.

And I am worried, because EA is involved.

And I was excited until I saw the cartoony, WoW/Clone Wars CGI, hybrid style graphics.

Oh my god, I can't play cartoon graphics games!

It's totally insulting to my perceived definition of adulthood!

I need to be surrounded by boobies, guts, gore, violence, and explosions so that I know I'm adult! I'm just not comfortable with this cartoon ****! I'm a man's man! Not some kid!

There are several articles all over the internet out now about it, ign.com has one. If you read them you'll find out a few things. First, Bioware actually gives you a reason for them not doing a KOTOR 3 outright and heading the MMO route. Also, they've said that there will be some returning characters (not listed yet) and as well, they have a writing team of 12 professional writers involved in JUST the storywriting for the game alone. They've stated that there will be more than enough storyline in the game to make up "KOTOR 3-4-5-6-7-8 and 9". If you ask me, that's a LOT better than a simple "KOTOR 3" storyline, then waiting another 4 years or so for KOTOR 4, and so on and so forth.

Gameplay > Graphics. Your example of WOW should be more than enough evidence for proving that fact. That and the sales of the Wii.

WoW has gameplay? Since when?
2008-10-21, 4:46 PM #12
Since 2004 baby!
2008-10-21, 5:10 PM #13
I highly doubt it.
2008-10-21, 5:11 PM #14
Doubt it all you want. The 10 million subscribers the game has would disagree with you. :)

More people combined bought Backstreet Boys albums by far.

So really, what is your point?
2008-10-21, 5:33 PM #16
Rob's right, WoW is horrible.
nope.
2008-10-21, 5:36 PM #17
Ugh. i was hoping against this.

i only play games for single player, and i'm very opposed to the idea of paying for a game more than once.

if they had an MMO that was A) Fun, and B) no monthly fee, and C) one could get as much out of it playing alone as with people, i might consider it.

More people bought Eminem's albums than all Backstreet Boys albums combined. What's your point? Video Games vs Music.. Ehh I don't really think you can compare the two industries.

My points are that with 10 million subscribers, Blizzard/WoW must have gotten SOMETHING right.

My second and more important point is that one person's "lack of gameplay" or "Backstreet boys omfgwtf album", is another person's "Awesome perfect amount of gameplay" or "Backstreet boys are still gay album". Opinions my friend. Nothing more. :)

So if I **** in a bucket, would you covet it like the greatest treasure?

If you can't see my point yet, you've been watching too many invisible dice rolls and need to stop staring at your digital female night elf's *** with a half-hard.

lawl. I play an undead male rogue actually. If I want to stare at an ***, I'll look at my RL girlfriend's. I can't speak for the rest of the MMO'ers out there though of that you are referring to..

But I still fail to see your point.. Because YOU think it's a bad game and that it does not follow your generic rules of what the best MMO should be, it therefore is and everyone else that plays it or disagrees with you is a piece of ****?

Perhaps you could elaborate just a bit more. Because I fail to see how you can compare WOW to ****ting in a bucket. 10 million people won't buy that **** in the bucket and then pay 15 bucks a month to stare at it.
2008-10-21, 6:25 PM #22
Only 10 million people think it's a good game.

That leaves well over 6 billion people that probably don't think.

Lets assume only around a half a billion people at the most have the internet.

Just because 10 million dumb people dump money into a **** pile doesn't mean it's a good game.

Deep down you must realized how lame the game is, otherwise you wouldn't need to argue why it isn't.
2008-10-21, 6:37 PM #23
It sounds good, but I don't think Bioware is even close enough to being competent to balance and maintain an MMO. Their SP games are some of the most horribly bug ridden software ever written. That's annoying in an SP RPG but showstopping in an MMO.

Anyway. I wanted more KotOR... but I guess now I'm interested in this. Considering how much I enjoyed KotOR 1 and 2, I'll have to check this one out

Limited number generators are about as much of a replacement for gameplay as collecting object quests are.

I didn't say WOW was the be all and end all of MMO's or the best example of what an MMO should be. I was saying that with a game that popular (10 million subscriptions) of a demand, obviously has more than just a few tricks and simple gimmicks to get some people to play it. It has to have some sort of depth and gameplay, or those said 10 million people wouldn't play it, let alone continue to pay for it 4 years after its release. I.e Vanguard and other Failed MMO's.

That argument is so flawed I'm not even going to touch it with a 10 foot pole. Also.. See above post in response to Baconfish. :)

WoW is fun, but it's not a particurally good game.

You're missing the point entirely. It's that you referenced your girlfriend as "RL girlfriend," implying that there is another kind of girlfriend. And that you might have one. In WoW.

Holy Jesus that completely went over my head. I didn't even pick up on that until I re-read what you said. I meant to reference her as "RL girlfriend" in response to Rob's comment about staring at a cartoon *** :)

Out of all the MMO's I've played though, WOW is the one that keeps me coming back. I play with about 10 friends so it doesn't matter really which MMO we play as long as we're playing together. However there have still been some really bad experiences in MMO's. I've played EQ, EQ2, AoC (Beta breifly, could not stand it), SW Galaxies, Asheron's Call, DAOC, City of Heroes/Villains, and a bunch of free MMO's. Out of all of 'em, I've enjoyed WOW the most. But Eq1 is in a class all on its own.

Are you suggesting most Wii games have good gameplay?

As much as I want to say gameplay is a more important than graphics, I honestly think it's such a poorly defining statement. Art direction can easily make or break a game.

Nah, I don't think that most Wii games have good gameplay. I was just using the Wii as an example that you don't need to have mind-blowing graphics in order to make a good game, or sell a lot of systems, etc. In essence, great graphics help but are not always critical.

NO!

I don't think the game will have a Jedi Tupac class, though.

I wish. I remember reading somewhere that since 2004, it's only cost Blizzard 200 million to set up and maintain World of Warcraft. They've made buttloads of money on top of the amount that they supposedly spend. Linkie.
