Someone apparently walked out into their backyard to find this going on. Photo's were taken near Cairns, northern Queenland (pretty sure the tropics start somewhere about that far north).

The spider is a Golden Orb Weaver, and although there's also a "Bird-Eating Spider" (Northern Tarantula) down here, this isn't it.

That is awesome. I bet that spider species was the inspiration for the 'Bugs' in Starship Trooper. Tarantula's are cute and fuzzy, but that thing is pure killing machine.

I hate spiders, but tarantulas don't bother me very much. I hate the long, spiny look of spider legs, but the thickness ratio of tarantulas is such that they are almost like rodents.

Well, spider silk is just about as about as strong as steel and nylon (of the same size)

While that pic of McGuire is equally disturbing, I'd crap my pants and probably pass out if I saw a spider that big. I did some "directed research" (for 1 credit hour) at the local uni by collecting and identifying some local spiders, but they were all teeny-weeny compared to that monster.

I'd probably be too scared to take a bat to it. Flamethrower maybe... on a 10 foot pole...
