Support my 72 hour fast
2008-10-28, 4:35 PM #1
So, I decided to fast for 72 hours. Starting midnight tonight, going all day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, I'll be going without food. I'm drinking only water during this time.

I'm not planning on changing my day to day activities at all to compensate for lack of food. I will be biking to and from school each day, going to every one of my classes and working when I am scheduled to work. I will be attending all three of my clubs, juggling Wednesday night, swing dance Thursday night, and Taekwondo Friday night.

I'm not doing this for religious reasons, or for health or purification. I just want to see if I can do it. Give me about a half an hour to collect my thoughts, then check out www.zaccohn.com for a post explaining my reasoning more in depth.

I signed up for twitter and registered my phone, so I'll be updating it often throughout the 72 hour period. Also, I figured I could have some fun with this, so I submitted a link to my twitter to Digg. If you guys could dig the news article, http://digg.com/food_drink/Man_fasts_for_72_hours, it could be fun.

I'm fully expecting all of my friends to be taunting me and tempting me with food the entire time, but I'm going to be holding myself accountable to the greatest force of all - The Internet.

I'll try it too

While I think you should continue to go to your classes and such, there's no reason to do such things as biking. There's a difference between "not compensating for fasting" and "being an idiot" for lack of more diplomatic words.

You are going to pass out if you continue to bike and do Taekwondo/Dance. Don't kid yourself. That's not a good idea at all if you aren't used to fasting.

Well.. I teach Taekwondo. I wouldn't be actually participating. And it ends two hours before my fast ends.

I really have no idea how I'm going to feel, so I AM playing this by ear. Everything I say is a goal, but if I gets unsafe at any point I have no qualms about changing those goals.

I wish you luck! Not like youd go out and eat a Garbage plate anyway...

Well, considering your motives, and with what you said, I'll definitely support you. Hope it goes well!

Might I suggest you also try at least a 24-hour "media" deprivation -- no internet, TV, radio, cellphone use, etc. The usual interpretation of this is "modern communication/entertainment conveniences" so I ended up reading during all my time. You can see my experience of it here:

I've done a 72 hour fast for the past 3 years at the beginning of Ramadan. Not because I'm Muslim, but because I like the humbling experience, and it's comparable to the Muslim reason.

The first time it was really hard and I was weak all day. The second time it was a lot easier, and this year I barely realized it happened.

Good luck! Do be careful though. It sounds like you are already doing too much on no food, so I hope you don't pass out. Make sure you sleep well.

good luck! Let me throw my support into the ring.

I have horrendous eating habits and I definitely chow down all the time for no reason other than the fact that it's there, I can, I'm bored, etc

Maybe I'll try to abstain from snacking in a [weak] show of support :P

I was exausted after a 42 hour fast. I'm wishing you luck, it's a hard task indeed.

A 16 hour nightly fast is normal for me (6pm to 10am ish) but I'm famished by time I get up in the morning (9ish) and ready to stuff myself by 2 in the afternoon. Good luck with that. I'll eat double to make up for it.

Good luck!

Don't push yourself too hard though, if you really really need to eat, and are on the verge of passing out, then I suggest you eat a small snack.

I once forgot to eat for a day or so when my parents were out of town. They I got dizzy and remembered about eating.
2008-10-28, 9:37 PM #21
I went 3 days without eating once. Well, it was actually 5 days with only eating a small piece of cake after 3 days. I was on a hunger strike to win an argument with my parents (They don't listen to logic so I had to torture myself to win) when I was like 12. It worked. I forget what it was over. Something stupid and minor, IIRC.

If you can focus on not wanting to eat, it's easy. If you're thinking about eating the whole time it sucks. Just try not to even think of food at all. Key is to keep busy.
2008-10-28, 9:42 PM #22
Earlier this month I didn't eat for about 2 and a half days because I didn't have any money. It wasn't too bad, although I definitely found myself feeling more tired than usual.

I only eat 1 small meal a day, so it's not like it'd be too hard for me to do it...

I'm not going to do it anyway, I'm still hungry all the time, but I'm too busy to care. :P
