Love that genre. Will we see some more do you think?

You'd think so with the prevalence of gamepads for PCs now (360 / PS3, PS2 adapters, etc).

Who would ever want to play those with gamepads? Should be played with a stick. period.

I used to play those games all the time, loved em. Haven't seen a good one since Freespace 2. There were two released not too long ago, one's called "X3: Terran Conflict" and the other is "Dark Horizon". I couldn't tell you if either is any good though.

Freelancer kicks ***.

I loved Freelancer up until I got to a certain mission that just seemed impossibly hard. I played through it twice on different occasions and got stuck on the same mission. Anyone experience this?

I don't remember 2003.

Is that the mission where you're constantly being chased?

New astro-sims? Hm, probably not.

There are a fair amount of them, like the X series or DarkStar: One, they're just very niche now, like adventure games.

You could hope for Infinity

Personally I think it looks very promising, but that dosen't mean much and nothing matters until it's actually released.

Also, if your willing to go back in time for some good space sim games, go play Independence War (BEST SPACE SIM EVAR! but hard to get running on modern PC's), or at lest Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos (not as good, but runs on modern PC's)

There's one genre that I really really wish would come back.. Which was the old school sierra adventure games. Space Quest was my first video game on a PC and my one of my favorite series of all-time. Police Quest got kinda meh after part 3 and Kings Quest was good until part 7.

Grim Fandango is probably the best adventure game ever.

X3 has been described as single player EVE though combat is more like an actual sim, with Newtonian physics. IGN lists it's genre as "Economic Simulation".

I think Terran Conflict is basically just Reunion + Xtended mod, in a box.

Grim Fandango was an excellent game. But I'm talking even further into the past, the era of having to type out what you want the character to do. Even the point and click ones were amazing, but not that far into the future of the genre. More along timeframe of the Indiana Jones and later Kings/Space Quest games (Parts 4 and up for each series) if you're going to the point-click era.

I only really played XvT, but jesus christ I'd love to see more of these games.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

X2/X3 are mostly economy based games to be honest. The real money was always in placing factorys and trading crap.

There is space fighting in it, but nothing amazing. Very repetative with little skill involved (other than having the bigger gun than the other dude).

I knew a guy who would play the original Descent with two joysticks (one for each hand) and a keyboard on the floor (operated with his feet). He was unstoppable.

I too would like to see a new space sim like X-Wing. I can't help, but wonder what the game would be like with the current technology.

If you want adventure games, hello, Sam and Max. At least one of them should be free on Steam.

I play through the campaign about three times a year. My guess is you're stuck on the mission to the Alaska system. That ones a real *****. Make sure you have the sort of shields that are strong against the Nomad weapons and always, always perform evasive maneuvers. It also helps to fly to the edge of the battlefield.

You know that if you turn on "drifting", and face backwards, ships can't chase you, right?

(I think this is a bug in the "match speed a pursue" coding, as your velocity is actually negative when you do this)

If I remember right it was some kind of escort mission, with a lot of ships on both sides.

Hah, I did notice that a while back. They'll still follow you unless you shoot at them, so it might be intentional behavior. Not really necessary for the campagn really because you usually have to kill enemy ships but very useful for navigating dangerous space.

I downloaded the Darkstar One demo yesterday and it wasn't too bad, so I nabbed it off eBay for $12.99 shipped. Should keep me occupied for awhile :neckbeard:
