One more reason I love college

I was looking through the catalog for my university tonight contemplating next semester's classes when I came across something. This small section talked about grades and such and I found a part that said a class can be taken as many times as a student wants, but only the latest grade for the class will be counted and calculated in your GPA. You have no idea how excited this made me. This meant I could erase the travesty that was my first year of college by taking those classes again and essentially having those Fs erased.

I'm curious if other universities have something similar to what mine does. Is my university just generous(read: happy to take more of my money) or do most universities do this and I'm late to the party?

Most universities let you.

They don't care about your GPA they just want mo money :)

But yea, they do this. At least the University I went to did. But I didn't go back. Not I get the same education for a whole lot less at community college.

That is already a long standing and well known benefit of colleges. This is a new one I never knew about.

You might want to double check. Sometimes there's a limit on how many grades you can replace.

My university replaces the grade with the best grade, I think.

My school doesn't do that :( If you take the class again, you just get an additional grade on your transcript and if there was a fail then that remains in your GPA even if you pass the next time.

Students who receive an F in a course may take the course for a new grade. The new grade, as well as the F, will be tabulated into the final GPA and a course unit will be awarded if the student receives a passing grade. If a student fails a course that is required for a major, he or she should think carefully before taking the course again, since poor performance in an introductory course may indicate a need to consider another major.

If a student re-takes a course for which he or she has received a passing grade (including a P in a pass/fail course), the new grade will not be tabulated into the final GPA nor will course credit be given. Some students opt to repeat a course in order to demonstrate their ability to achieve a better grade. The second grade will be recorded on the transcript, but it will not be counted in the student's cumulative average, and no additional credit will be awarded for it.

Your GPA isn't on your diploma.

Cal let you take the same class up to three times when I was there.

My school had a limit of 6 times retaking classes I believe.

Apparently with most britversitys if you say, fail something then take it again they highest grade you can get from then on is the lowest ppass grade.
nope.

Well, depending on mitigations, as well.

And at least in Birmingham you only get one chance with your third- and fourth-year exams. No summer retakes unless you were horribly crippled in a car accident in April and couldn't attend your exams, or something. And even then, that's not a sure thing.

At Lancaster, any resit is capped at the pass mark (40%). If you could just resit an entire module, it devalues the degree for everyone that passed it the first time round. For this reason, you're not supposed to be able to resit a year (as you'll have done everything before, and you'll almost certainly get better marks). Unless there's some terrible personal circumstances that allow it.

My flatmate wasted his year, smoking weed all the time, never did courseworks and failed all his exams. He then lied about his grandfather dying, so the University would let him resit the year. We were ****ing furious with him. He could easily get a 2:2 and it would never state on his CV that he had done so while redoing the year, or redoing the modules. This is completely unfair if he's competing for a job with someone that also got a 2:2 without redoing the year.

If you've failed a module, or failed a year, you've ****ing failed and that should be that. Being able to retake a class completely devalues it from all the people that didn't fail the first time round, and devalues the University as a whole.

(Fortunately, despite retaking the entire year, my flatmate still spent the year smoking weed and failed the year again and dropped out.)
