hey friends, I have a question about Video Card Drivers for laptoppies
2008-11-03, 7:59 PM #1
I have a GeForce Go 7900 GTX, 512 MB. I want to update my drivers, for kicks, and because every time I run FC2 it says "You are out of date mofo."

I heard a rumor once that nVidia et. al. do not support laptop vid cards w/ drivers, and this seems to be true because whenever I download the latest 7 series card drivers from nVidia, I am told that "No drivers could be located that are compatible with my current hardware."

I have heard that you can get the **** at laptopvideo2go.com however, and I downloaded the most recent applicable driver, with the same result!

So! Is there something I need to know but don't? Is there a good source for drivers, or am I out of luck?

Thanks much, in advance!

Omg, my friend has the same exact problem as you ... and couldn't figure out how to fix it :( If you get an answer, though, please let me know so I can pass it on to him.

hey guys :)

If it runs the game anyway I'd just ignore it.

You don't think there's much of a possibility of improvement in performance with new drivers? Apparently my current drivers, or maybe just the card itself? don't support AA, which, y'know, I'd like to have.

Any version of the driver should support AA. Are you sure it's not forcibly disabled in the nvidia control panel?

You are installed these right?

Just making sure your not trying to install the standard Forceware drivers, you need to use the mobile versions.

That could be the case, Triscuit, I'll check it out. Thanks for the replies, guys.

Have you looked into: http://www.omegadrivers.net/

I've used them for every Windows desktop I've owned. Not sure if they do laptop or no.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

I'll confirm that they work great on laptops. At least on my old Radeon 9600 Mobile.

I've had bad luck with new drivers on my laptop as well. Make sure, before you install anything else, that you have the original manufacturer's drivers ready.

Use the go series?

You need the Go series drivers.

I stumbled upon this page which reports
“Mobile GPU’s like the GeForce Go and Quadro Go family of mobile GPU’s use drivers that have been customized to support hot key functions, power management functions, lid close and suspend/resume behavior that are normally found in notebooks. The reference desktop graphic drivers that are provided by NVIDIA on our driver downloads page do not include these custom features. For this reason, the NVIDIA Forceware NVIDIA graphics display drivers will not install on most Geforce and Quadro family of mobile GPU’s.” And, “please visit the drivers page for your notebook manufacturer.“
Edit: I found this: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=216838 (Link is for XP version, if you need Vista just google for it as there is a version for both)

They seem to be very well praised by users. Your card is listed as supported, so give it a try and lemme know if it works :)

I'll look into that too when I get the chance.

I had same problems with my mobility radeon, I could find NOTHING that actually worked except digging up the notebook manufacturers drivers. I had a generic notebook with linux preinstalled, I was lucky they provided windows drivers on disk when I got it. (Wife uses it now, wanted Windows). I saw a bunch of sites with drivers that supposedly worked but they had zillions of steps to get them working and I didn't want to spend more time on it. I guess this is score one for buying a name-brand laptop.

I tried those once but they made the textures in JO disappear until I turned vsync on. Then I think I had a BSOD.

Yes, Omega drivers are hacked together by some idiot as I recall.

Well, Pommy, I tried that driver...

There isn't too much improvement, really... I think a bit, I'm gonna benchmark and find out for sure I guess.

It made the icons (showing current positions, etc) disappear from the in-game map, however... -_-

Yeah, see what I mean? It's some guy that pokes around with the drivers without knowing how they work.

This was the MobileForce driver, not the Omega one. Point still stands though, I guess.

hrmm. Should I really expect much of a performance boost from updated drivers?

CM, etc, I checked the Nvidia control panel, and AA does not appear to be force disabled... when I click on the dropdown menu for AA in game, however, the only option is 'none'.

What's MobileForce? Is that the official Go driver?
