I actually posted about this in the Election thread but the explanation was that exit polls indicate that Obama will win.

Google has Obama winning California, Washington, and Hawaii even though none of them have submitted any votes yet.

I find it kinda interesting that the election can be considered "over" before the polls in places such as Alaska even closed.

exit polls declare elections it seems

confuses me when you can call a state with 8% of the state counted

I honestly thought exit polls were pretty much a way for stations to fill in time between hours that the counted votes would come in.

At least this time around they waited until all of the polls in states were closed before calling them.
