Now that the Presidential race is over for tonight and we can take half a breath,

have any of you been following the Props?

Prop 8 (ban gay marriage) is leaning yes right now 54-46%. I am very concerned.

Prop 4 (abortion limitations) is pretty much 50-50 at the moment.

Both of these with approximately 15% of precincts voting in.

Anyone have a link to trackers for all of the measures?

Good link.

It sucks about Prop 8. Prop 102 (same thing) passed here... :(

I've been watching Prop 8. Obama's current lead over McCain is disproportionately small compared to his polling. If enough of the Obama voters also voted no on 8, there are plenty of votes still out there to kill the measure.

hahahahahaha.

CA likes chickens more than gays.

It pisses me off prop 2 passed; prop 8 is a huge disappointing surprise as well.

Common-law marriages are banned in Florida. Way to fail. Apparently the US hates gays and unwed couples.

Also some state abolished affirmative action. We're doing great.

Judging by the results displayed, I'd say its because something else has replaced the stick.

Ah, some good news.

Which state was that? Sounds like they aren't retarded.
2008-11-04, 11:15 PM #17
Well, it's been slowly shifting to No as more results come in... right now it's at...

Yes: 52.8%
No: 47.2%
Reporting: 38.7%

For reference, when 22% were reporting, the yes vote was 53.8%.

And I agree with banning affirmative action.
2008-11-04, 11:30 PM #18
Same.

Not sure if many people actually understand this, but abolishing affirmative action is a step closer to equality, not away.

Well, I can definitely see the other side.

Think of it like a race track. If you start everyone at the same point, runners on the outside have to run a lot faster even if they just want to finish at the same as the runner on the inside lane. So you give them a head start to level the playing field.

But I think that more importantly than that, giving certain races preference over other races is a form of racism, so you're just perpetuating racial inequality anyway.

Well said. I guess at that point you would just have to look at the results since it was first established and base your decision accordingly, that is -- which idea sounds nice and which one is whats actually going on.

53% Yes / 47% No, 54.3% reporting.
2008-11-05, 12:16 AM #22
um, do you guys even know what prop 8 is all about? Yes on prop 8 isn't going to ban gay marriage. It's going to put it back on the ballet for another, constitutional, vote, and remind the state supreme court that they can't just change ignore the democratic process if they don't like the way people voted. I'm all for gay marriage, but I'm totally against giving the supreme court the power to render democracy pointless.

Fiscal Impact: Over next few years, potential revenue loss, mainly sales taxes, totaling in the several tens of millions of dollars, to state and local governments. In the long run, likely little fiscal impact on state and local governments.

It sounds like they want to make gay marriage not valid in the state constitution to me el oh el.

actually as much as i dont like the supreme court overturning a majority vote, this time they did exactly what they were supposed to. banning mirage based on sexual orientation is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. which is why this measure to amend the california constitution... if it passes which it likely to, it will most likely be brought (eventually) to the U.S. supreme court and dealt with on that level.

and for everyone yelling about the bible thumping idiots voting for prop 8, i am guessing if anyone were to do a study, that you would find some surprising divides along racial lines, not just religious. not a popular sentiment, i am sure. but well there it is.

also woohoo for ending affirmative action!

Yeah, Prop 8 IS the vote. Whoever told you that totally suckered you.

But it looks like it's going to pass... well I don't know it was at 53.1 a while ago now it's down to 52.6...

A) Mirage? AGAIN?

B)
Quote:
A Yes on 8 campaign spokesman said Mormon donors make up "30 to 40 percent" of the $28 million ProtectMarriage.com has raised this year to place a ban on same-sex marriage into the state constitution. Since Oct. 1, the committee has received nearly as much out-of-state money from Utah as from the other 48 states combined, a Mercury News review of campaign records shows. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not donated to Proposition 8 as an organization, but Mormon elders strongly encourage adherents to donate time and money.

Mormons are only 2% of California's population... and they raised over 30% of the money...

C)You're probably right about race though. If California was whiter it would probably not pass.

Prop 8 is passing by 350,000 votes right now, with 72% reporting. Assuming that all precincts have the same turn out (and that's a huge assumption, I know), there's still almost 3 million votes left to count.

And I checked CNN's exit polls for prop 8, and you're right Alran.

White: 53% No
Black: 70% Yes
Latino: 51% Yes
Asian: 53% No
Other: 50% Split

There's some other interesting stuff here, like gender/age stuff:

[Heh, college graduates voted 55% against, non-grads voted 56% for]

Mormans monitarily contributing to prop 8 sounds like a church/state issue to me.

I'm going to sleep now and I am hoping that when I wake up there will be good news >_<

Same-sex marriage is banned - what about same-sex civil unions? The wording doesn't seem to outlaw that.

It doesn't make much sense for any constitutional amendment to be passed with such a slim majority. What happens to the 48-49% of the population who opposed the measure? That is just way too close.

Depends on the state's constitution.
