long story short, transmission gave me the finger and i barely limped back to campus.

even shorter story short: genk needs vibes and or free car

short story longer: my car has been making me more and more paranoid about it the past few months every once in a while. Well tonight the girlfriend and I wanted to go over to Target for a bit, started to slow for a stoplight BAM wheels lock up. put it in neutral, put it in drive, move to the turning lane since the car stayed on and it could still move, got over to a parking lot, had it lock up a couple more times. called dad, checked tranny fluid, smelled burnt and a little bit low. Subaru's have this nifty AWD to FWD fuse switch, did that, limped back to school.

D: yep, need a new car. the great thing is that something in the tranny died on my OTHER car late this summer.

wooh.

i had that happen to me only it was the alternator. another time it was the airflow sensor. better than the transmission though...i've had almost every car i've owned have a transmission problem.

I had a fuel pump die on me a couple months ago. Had to completely remove and set aside the entire rear axle to drop the fuel tank just to change it.

This one reason however why I like the American rear drive platform. At the drop of a hat I could find a replacement transmission for no more than a couple hundred bucks and swap it out in a weekend with basic tools.

My frame rusted out where my left control arm was attached to it. seems to be a bad year for cars.

I had combination trouble of overheating and a broken ignition switch during a camping trip. Died on the side of the road. MacGyver pulled over and fixed it for me with a short bit of wire. Connect wire to starter directly, put key in on position, tap wire to positive battery terminal while pulling throttle cable a bit. Truck starts!

I got a newer truck in better condition. >__>

heh, that reminds me of when I was too lazy to get a new battery so I just kickstarted my car any time I needed to go anywhere.

Never seen a tranny die in a way that it locks up wheels, but I've never owned or driven a AWD car. I've had the notorious late shifts followed by no shifts. Or losing all forward moving gears together. Mmmm I love manuals now, only problem with them is replacing a clutch once in a while.

Yea, manuals ftw. I am a much better driver in them, too.
And also, like I said earlier, if your starter dies you can still start your car :)

Yeah, battery too. Of course you need a bit of a runway though. :)

I don't know how to do that one, what do you do?

The exact same thing - bump start it.

My Taurus refuses to put out heat unless it's either: already pretty warm outside OR I'm going at least 50MPH. Flushed the system and replaced the thermostat or whatever it's called, still no go.

I have identified the problem:
