Join The Impact (Prop 8)
2008-11-14, 9:02 PM #1
I know this is kind of late, but tomorrow there's going to be hundreds of protests across the country against Prop 8 and the other anti-gay marriage bans. I know most of you probably don't feel strongly enough about the issue to spend a few hours screaming over it, but for anyone interested, here's the site:

http://jointheimpact.wetpaint.com/

It's a pretty terrible site, but from the state pages you can get to the Facebook pages for each rally. Just thought I'd put this out there.

I agree with this effort. Homophobia is pretty gay.

lol, best protest sign ever on that site! "keep your magic undies off my civil rights"

i dont think this will ever be over until the "church" and the gay community are able to come to terms with each other. right now its a whole lot of mud slinging from both sides. and as much as i hate to admit it i dont think that change will start with the "church"

So much drama over a little bit of tax code. At least everyone's occupied with something totally irrelevant.
2008-11-15, 1:03 PM #14
its not just a little bit of tax code. if were going to be honest this is a MAJOR seperation of church and state issue.

What should be: church state
What is right now: chusrtcahte

Quick poll: How many of you will cry if "In God We Trust" is removed from our money. If you are said group, why?

Yes. Who you choose to love is no ****ing business of the state. It's sad that it's probably going to take another 100 years for people to become smart enough to understand. But for now polygamy is scary and weird and it's DIFFERENT from OUR TRADITIONS. zomg.

The problem with polygamy is that historically (and well, currently in fundamentalist Mormon compounds...) is that's it's not a man who loves and is loved by more than one woman and they all get married and live happily. They are usually arranged or forced marriages. For instance, Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon church, married several 14 and 15 year old girls by promising them and their families eternal salvation.

But if 3+ people really wanted to get married? I don't know. It would be really complicated for legal/tax reasons...

Anyway, I had to work today so I didn't get to go to the protest. But there were 2000 people at the Phoenix one!
2008-11-15, 9:11 PM #19
Then culthood should get the rap for it, not polygamy.

The problem with polygamy is that it denies many man the chance to have a family. Polygamy is better in the long run for women (They can group up on the best mates) and Monogamy is better in the long run for men (There's enough chicks for everyone)

If we had a polygamous system, the richest men would monopolize all the women. If they all had five wives, then there's 80% of the male population sitting around with no wives at all. And when you're faced with the prospect of never having a wife, and a family, those instinctual urges have to be focused on something else. Which might lead you to strap bombs onto your chest and blow up innocent children under the promise of getting seventy two virgins in heaven.

So. No. Polygamy should not be legal, and if you think it's anything but destructive, you're a fool.

Um, no. Read the constitution.

This is an issue of people try to fight opinions with laws, because they are too socially and intellectually inept to actually talk to each other. It's entirely irrelevant. No one is stopping anyone from buying rings and having a ceremony. It has zero impact on anyone's life. Passing or not passing the law with change NOTHING. It's a pissing contest for the sake of a pissing contest.

What? System? What the hell are you talking about?

You can't systemize love. To the extent that we do this now is only harmful.

Besides, your rant isn't even logical. Polygamy means having more than one spouse. Gender is irrelevant. It isn't logical to assume more males would have multiple wives than the reverse.

No, Free, polygamy is specifically multiple wives. Polyandry is specifically multiple husbands. He's still exaggerating by a lot though.

And Obi, that's a cute attempt at understanding the issue.

Nope, polygamy is generic. Polygyny is what you're thinking of.

No, but the law prohibits two gays from gaining the same economic benefits as two straight people. All people deserve equal protection under the law, and that is not equal. How is it hard to see that?

Oh, not this pop-psychology nonsense again. Bigamy is pretty uncommon even in the societies that allow it, plenty of suicide bombers are men with families, and a rising number of them are women.

um yes actually the "legal" aspects of marriage are a glaring example of how church and state are NOT separate. any time you have legal benefits granted by a classically christian ceremony performed by the "church" it is inherently going to cause problems with the separation of church and state. :colbert:

If social values are a factor in matrimony, why not restrict marriages that are a result of TV game shows and Vegas partying? One should have to have a waiting period to marry and require to take a breathalyser test before filing the papers.

Even if you had civil unions that granted the same economic benefits, that's still no good. We don't do "separate but equal" in this country anymore.

Worst case scenario is that nobody gets married anymore. Ultimately, as long as the courts continue their sexist practice of siding with mothers, men lose. So guys. Really. It's in our best interest to keep marriage around. And banning a certain form it clearly weakens it!

I think I forgot an 'of' in there somewhere.

But yes. Banning gay marriage actually weakens traditional marriage.
