Anyone managed to get into the preview? It is completely and totally :awesome:

I got in yesterday, and it's pretty cool. Here's some things I observed:

A. Avatars as expected are pretty much a gimmick, and clothing choices are few. Yet there's approximately 50 billion hairstyles. I still like their design better than Mii's though.
B. The entire interface is MUCH faster. It doesn't take forever to scroll through the marketplace, and reading descriptions finally has the ability to manually scroll (right stick)
C. Install to HD is pretty slick but don't expect massive improvements. For size usage comparison, GTA4 came in at 6.8GB.
D. I'm not sure if this was available on the original interface, but you can set your own "wallpaper" now if you don't wish to use a theme. Use the picture library and hit the appropriate button to make the image your background on the dash.
E. Couldn't test Party mode yet as you have to have others in NXE to use it :saddowns: Although I am probably the most excited about this feature.
F. The install process was painless and can be done without anything more than saying "yes" when it prompts to update. No sitting and waiting on it. It took longer to download than it did to install, but the whole process took less than 5 minutes on my decent cable connection over wifi.
G. Many menus are nearly the same as they were on the old interface, such as the system settings. You won't be easily lost. It's all "familiar" but different. Random observation: The xbox connection test now is a little more graphical. It reminds me of Vista's Networking Center map.
H. The ingame guide menu seems faster. It doesn't lag anymore, especially when a game is loading and such.

If you guys have any questions or stuff you want me to test, lemme know and I'll take a look at it.

How do you get in? I suppose it doesn't matter since it'll changeover this upcoming week. But :awesome: Looking forward to the Netflix hookup.

Yeah I'm excited for it, I really hope that it makes starting games with a group an easier operation.

Did they improve the ability to control music/playlists from the guide, or is that exactly the same?

Longer/short startup time?

Private chat/friend invites still the same?

On a related note, I got Games for Windows Live working with Fallout 3, and apparently they just released a nice, new and slick interface for it a few days ago. When I enabled live, though, it moved my saved games somewhere else, and I had to move them back. Hurr Vista.

Anyways, I like the PC/360 integration Windows Live brings.

Oh and online play is free for PC versions. Though that's useless for fallout.

Is this why Live was being such a ***** last night?

You had to sign up about 2 weeks ago. Signups are closed.

Music playlists are unfortunately the same basic interface.

And JM:

No, apparently that was unrelated, accordign to Major Nelson. But it seems fixed now.

I assume by startup you mean of the 360 to the dash. It's about a couple seconds longer, hardly noticible. However, they redid the automatic login so everything doesn't flash and reload after it signs you in on start up. Now it makes sure to log you in before you get to the menus.

Private Chats have been replaced by Party Mode it looks like, although it's essentially the same just with support for more people and the possibility to stay in the same games. Again, I can't really test this yet as you can't initiate any private chats with old 360 interface users.

Friend invites look similar I guess.

Like I said above, it was unrelated according to Major Nelson.

I heard you have to put in the disc you want to play before you can play it on HDD .. That true? What's the point? (My xbox cd player is really loud so it's worth it to me, but I dunno about everyone else)

Because otherwise people would just rent from Blockbuster or wherever and have the game forever. Having to put the disk in is just their method of checking whether you own the game or not.

Oh yea, that would be awesome.

Though I'm sure some hackers will find a way you can burn DVDs with a small file to pass this check.
2008-11-16, 4:16 PM #18
What is the advantage of running the games from the HDD if you have to put the disk in anyways? Is it just supposed to read faster and cause less slowdowns or what?

Well for me: my player is REALLY loud (only for some games though, which is weird)

Other than that, no clue. Maybe for putting in CDs to listen to for the game?

Yeah, it's supposed to decrease load times, and also you don't have to hear the high pitch whine of the drive running.
2008-11-16, 10:31 PM #21
Yes. Gears (both) seems to make my drive go bat-**** crazy loud. Quite looking forward to a quick check, then away we go.
2008-11-16, 11:30 PM #22
Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one with loud problems. I was thinking the people I bought the xbox from dropped it or something.
