reguarding monitors

Two things I could use some clarification on in reguards to LCD monitors.

HDMI and DVI

Obviously they mean better picture quality but what are the differences beteween the two and which is "better"? I usually focus on the internals of my computer rather then the external hardware, so monitors are a new thing for me considering I'm still using a CRT.

thanks in advance

DVI replaced VGA, which is still a good input for monitors IMO. HDMI is the incoming multimedia cable format, which happens to be capable of transferring audio as well as who knows what other info. I know that the X360 tells my TV what it is when I plug it in. So small data transfer too maybe?

You're going to pay more for HDMI probably, and if you're just using your PC for typical stuff, surfing, papers, games... you dont really need it. but hey, just my op.

Ah, okay. its defenitely more for gaming then anything, possibly movies and such. I'm assuming that it will not be backwards compatible with DVI?

It's a whole different connector and wire.

It's also required for some copy-protected content, no?

HDMI and DVI are virtually identical. HDMI has an extra signal wire for carrying digital audio, and also supports the transport of some forms of protected content. With the exception of use with protected content, you can use adapters to change between the two. They will provide identical picture quality.

Actually, DisplayPort is replacing them both, because HDMI and DVI won't have enough bandwidth for super and ultra HD.

Buy your cables from MonoPrice, don't get ripped off from Best Buy. If a digital cable is well built and within specifications, it'll perform exactly the same as any overpriced Monster cable.

As Emon mentioned, there are HDMI<-->DVI cables and such.

Also, if for whatever reason you don't like monoprice, Woot has em for $2-3 a pop occasionally. I bought one a long time ago and I'm using it to hook my HTPC to my HDTV. Works excellently.

I read about that, but we probably wont be seeing mainstream advancement in HD for a while. The jump to 1080i/p has taken quite a while to become affordable at the average consumer level.

This is because of price fixing on LG's part.

You're about to see HDTV's drop massively in price, at least LCD and Plasmas. New innovations everyday.
