i'm trying to play videos on the 360 from the computer but the 360 doesn't have the codecs. is there any way to get codecs on the 360 (ffshow maybe)?

I know that the 360 will prompt you to download a codec so you can play mpeg-4 movies (Xvid) and such. But as for more codec support, I'm unsure

If it doesn't offer to get the codec for you, then there isn't a codec available for it. With the support of XVID/DIVX files, the issue is now more about audio than video. I have a lot of files it can read the video of, but not the audio.

Unfortunately, unless you convert the files yourself, there's nothing you can do.

mencoder, part of mplayer, can re-encode the audio of a video but leave the video parts alone.

Of course it requires a bit of patience to RTFM and figure out the command-line options you'll need (check the examples in the docs for a starting point).
