I've been at work since 7:30am. It's now knocking on 7pm and I'm still here. This isn't because I'm a slacker, or an incompetent - it's because my superiors accepted silly deadlines. In fairness to them, we needed the work (read: economic downturn) but we're getting butt*****d. I'm getting butt*****d.

Now the reason I'm really miffed is because it's friday, and dagnabbit I should be down the pub.

Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Oh, an 11.5 hour day? I pull 16 hour days for 2 weeks at a time in the summer, though I do get overtime for all those extra hours.

I pull 13 hours frequently, but I'm getting paid for it.. :P

I pull 0 hour days for 365 days a year.

Actually, now I think about it, I do work occasionally--the last time being a hellacious two weeks where I worked like 150 hours.

Oh yeah Avenger, my dad's always worked shifts (mainly 12 hour ones) and I'm not bothered about long hours - I'm just p****d off because it's not my fault and it's friday! :)

I'm home now though (got in about 8:30)

I worked a 15 hour day on Wednesday and a 17 hour day yesterday...entirely because other people didn't do their jobs when they should have. I know how you feel...

Brian - I'm a structural engineer. Currently I'm working on a funny mixed use building for a big DIY firm - it's part car park, part office, and part mock store where they figure out how they're going to arrange the stock in the stores throughout Britain.

Basically, we've been going hell for leather to get the first bits of steel approved so we can get our guys fabricating it, but to the detriment of the rest of the structure. In essence it "stands up" - the philosophy is sound, but we haven't designed the steel that makes up the ramps that serve the car park on floors 2, 3 and 4. I started it late last night, and I've taken our design laptop home this weekend to do more on it. I've even cancelled a trip to Durham to see my old uni friends to do this. My boss friggin' owes me for this. (The work laptop is this AWESOME HP monster though with uber-mega-display and about 14 million rabbitfeet of RAM. I'll take some screenies of the design software later today)

Oh, and now I've just remembered the Architect has moved about 80% of the service voids in the zone we had signed off for construction, so I have to move all those around, redesign any failing members and pass all this off onto our already overworked draughtsman who may eat me.

Having studied both, I totally agree. Soil mechanics is dull, and most, but not all, civil engineers spend most of their time designing foundations for structural engineers, roads if they're lucky, and things like dams if they're extremely lucky.

Oh, and yes, I'm still working on Sunday night, having spent 3 or four hours yesterday on it too. Hu-frigging-zah.

Im salaried. I often work 13-14 hour days because I don't realize the time has passed. I like my job that much.

[Edit: oh, yeah, and I have no life, and nothing better todo]
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Dunno try working in the hospital laundry... that worse than a lot of jobs.
I start at 7.30AM so that kinda sucks, but there you go...

Its a job :)

I get most of my TV time at work. As long as the job is done at the end of the day, they don't care. Now what do you think?

Martyn let's team up :) plz
2008-11-23, 10:35 PM #26
That sounds distressingly familiar.
Also I just got hit with a 16% pay cut because of the "economic downturn" and my damn dirty lying employer blamed it on their client instead of their own stupid stockholder decisions.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

Advice noted. I haven't yet reached the point where I commit to one or the other, although I would love to do things such as roads/overpasses/other forms of civil infrastructure.

I work 12+ hour days and I love it. I'd rather do what I have a passion for than force myself to do something else (I'm not saying you don't have a passion for structural engineering!).

I'm a game designer =)

This sounds a lot like the way I imagine the jobs everyone else in my class is already chasing.

I work at a small company, and none of the developers are really expected to do that kind of crap.

Don't get me wrong, if that's your thing you'll be happy as a pig in s**t! Some very close of mates love their work in highways (apparently there's less stress because roads don't fall over). Bridges are also awesome, but over here they're quite a specialist thing which I'd love to have a crack at, but don't know if it'll ever happen.

They told me I can't work tonight because there isn't enough work.

Too bad I have a five guarantee and I'm going to grieve it. They'll be paying me the time anyways.

I don't have a job. College is my excuse. :awesome:

But having worked ridiculous hours in the past, I feel your pain.
