Awkward Work Racism

I've heard my own father say some pretty awful racist things, but I guess I never paid attention to them. He ended up completely 360ing on race after watching some speech on Public access that explained how racism develops in a person, and how racist logic works. My father identified all of it in himself, and completely understood where his hatred came from. He never really explained it to me until tonight, just a few seconds ago when I explained what happened today, and we started talking about race. Interesting story.

If he '360'd then surely he'd spun all the way around and was right back where he started?

JediKirby's story didnt really shock me much, my first thought was along the lines of 'Welcome to the real world'. And it seemed to apply equally to both the prospective student and JediKirby. Even JediKirby's initial response sounds like tour guide training verbatim. They anticipate these types of questions.

(JediKirby - If your training didnt prepare you for that scenario, and that is all your own on the fly-response, they definately got the right man for the job!)

The last thought that occured to me was about the questions:

"What kind of people are here?.. Well, not to be racist, but are there like, black people here?" "Is it a nice neighborhood, and who lives there? Is it like a ghetto?"

Would it have been less shocking if these questions where asked by a prospective black student?

I'm a bit racist, or at least i seem to be, because i REFUSE to be politically correct like all the other morons who cant think for themselves.

ie. I now live in Southampton. Southampton has a LOT of violent crime. Southampton has a LOT more black people than my last 2 towns. Connection? Not quite, its just that poorer areas such as council estates are run down and many more people will turn to crime to better their situation/drugs. A higher percentage of blacks live in the poorer areas than the more peaceful middle class areas.... therefore, some people percieve blacks and other minorities as causing crime, which is an unfair generalisation.*

I'm losing you guys here, just nod your heads and agree...

* Apart from Romanians, they're all criminals and skanks, bloody Romanians! :XD:

you really never saw a black guy until college?

Kansas is a very, very white state, with the exception of the Kansas City metro area, and, even then, it's not as racially diverse as other urban areas of the country.

There's a reason why Fred Phelps was able to make such a strong base in Kansas.

Uh... no. People can mean one thing and mistakenly say another.
It's a pretty basic concept really.
