So now that Christmas time is coming around I've been looking up some DVDs to pick up.

I'd really like to get Wall E and I'd LOVE to have all the extra features that come with Blu Ray.

howeverrrrrrrr I don't have a blu ray player :(

I'm not sure if its really worth it to go pick one up for one or two movies right off the bat. I could pick up a ps3, but I wouldnt buy many games for it. Hell, probably only GT5 :P

So is it worth it to get a blu ray player for all that WallE goodness, or should i just suck it up and go for regular dvd?

Slickdeals reports a ton of blu-ray players getting marked down for Black Friday, so it might be worth it.

Tropic Thunder has some pretty good extras too.

My HTPC came with a HD-DVD/blu-ray combo drive so I lucked out and didn't have to buy a separate player <_<

Retail, PS3's aren't even a good deal for bluray anymore. The lowest price retail PS3 now is $400, while bluray players are starting to break the $200 mark.

if you have an HDTV it's worth it...

the price difference for the movies isn't as much as some people claim (the difference between the 3-disc wall-e dvd and bluray is a whole $2 on amazon)

players are getting cheaper... you can get a Samsung BD-P1500 for $204 on amazon, add a 1GB+ flash drive and with the latest firmware it becomes a Profile 2.0 player

if you don't have an HDTV you can still use a bluray player but i don't suggest buying one unless you intend on buying an HDTV in the near future

Yea we don't have an HDTV so I'm aware that i wont have the full quality from the player. Not sure when I'd buy an HDTV, but it wouldn't be in the next couple of months.

guess I've gotta do some more research!

If you don't have an HDTV you won't see any improvement whatsoever, actually.

Standard def TVs run at 480i, or 480p max if it happens to be "Enhanced Definition" (has component in).

DVDs run at 480p (most of them, that is).

So basically I'd be paying for the added features on the WallE dvd >_>

not entirely true... DVD still has artifacts and color inaccuracies that are often not present on bluray... downscaled bluray can be an improvement but a tiny one

But any SDTV probably won't have the color accuracy for this to actually be noticeable.

the inaccuracies i speak of are things like orangish reds or with wall-e all the early scenes outside on earth have an overall shift towards yellow compared to the bluray

and SDTVs can easily have just as good or better color accuracy than an HDTV

Except they don't, because they almost all either low end and have terrible color calibration, or old and their color's shot.

It's like CRT monitor. Technically CRTs should produce a better picture than LCDs, but it's hard to find one that isn't a horrible low end model, or really old and falling apart.

Get the regular DVD.

When you've saved up enough for an HDTV, Blu Ray will be a lot cheaper. That's when it will be worth it.

There is no reason for this as far as DVDs go. Many bluray movies even use the same type of compression (MPEG2 streams).

uhm... no some of the older encodes use mpeg2 (at a much higher bitrate than DVD) but the vast majority of bluray releases use VC-1 or AVC

Wall-E on Blu-ray is said to be one of the best looking Blu-rays. Considering the transfer on Ratatouille, I can believe that statement. I watched the Incredible Hulk last night and the picture quality was superb as well (along with the movie and the deleted scenes).

Yeah Blu-ray players now days are between $150-$200. Keep an eye on this site, http://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=49 or slickdeals.net for special sales.

If you've got an HDTV, you need blu-ray :P

Otherwise you should be good with DVDs, I still find VHS to be enough for me.

The Blu-ray version of Hellboy 2 back on November 23 had this interesting chat event where you could talk to Del Toro in real time, while watching the movie. Unfortunately, my copy came in the mail came one day late.

If you're planning on getting an HDTV ANYTIME soon, Black Friday would be the best time to go for one.

There was a Sony Blu-ray player for $150 free shipping this morning from Sony Style. Unfortunately, the deal is dead now. You have to be on your toes during this time of the year for deals.
