What's the best antivirus program?
2008-11-29, 7:30 AM #1
Seeing how I have to reformat and reinstall Windows on my laptop, I figure I would try a new antivirus program. Personally, I wasn't too fond of McAfee due to it being a resource hog. So what antivirus programs do you guys use and what do you recommend?

From my Googling, I have found the following to be recommended. Ironic, the free ones are said to be good as the commercial ones such as Norton.

Antivir 99.8%
Avast! 99.3%
AVK 2009 99.8%
F-Secure 2009 99.2%
Ikarus 99.5%
Kaspersky 98.4%
Norton 2009 98.7%
TrustPort 99.5%
WebWasher-GW 99.7%

They didn't test NOD32, and the site seems sketchy. Test is fail.

NOD32 sucks; it slows down your internet connection to a crawl.

If you're going to use scores, don't get them from anywhere but here:

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

It's the best antivirus reviewing website on the net. They keep empirical data so they can provide backing and substance to their scores.

Thank you, guys. I'm probably going to use Avast after factoring in all the inputs. Some people are saying on forums that it can catch stuff that AVG is not able to.

as long as you don't do dumb things you'll be fine with something like avg. if you do dumb things it won't matter what you have. i've seen machines infected with just about any av running happily saying the machine was "protected"

Still a huge fan of Nod32's speed and detection rates.

No it doesn't? And even if it did, you can easily turn off the HTTP scanning anyway. :downs:

I use Bullguard. Hardly any annoying dialog boxes. No successful virus/attacks in the last year. Does it's job anyway. I use the normal version but I presume the gaming version is just as awesome.

So what you're saying is "use AVG"?
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

What ^ said.

I download tons of random crap too, once in a while will go to a porn site, etc. Have never had any problems.

So what do most viruses actually do? Maybe I have a ton and just don't know it.
