I think, as you so elegantly put it... you're ****ed.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Find exact same type of drive. Exchange guts. Hope.

(At least open it up and snag those magnets!)

This is doable, but realize that every time you hear a "click" the read head is quite literally gouging data off your platters.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

well perhaps its not so much the click of death. it actually sounds more like the motor just stops, and then starts again.

Seal the drive in something water-tight. Put it in the freezer for an hour. Hope.
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

I've got one that sounds like the armature has broken.

I can read the drive for about 30 seconds before it stops responding, usually just long enough to get a list of all the directories.

The click is more likely the head returning the 'home' position, and not actually scraping the discs themselves. That usually causes a grinding sound.

If it incredibly important, couldn't you just hand it to people who specialize in data recovery? I mean, how critical is the stuff on the drive?

Then again, what are the prices for data recovery these days?

apparently i ahve a data recovery company located right here in cleveland that i could just drive by and drop off to. free diagnostic and estimate. what do you think? should i go for it? freezer trick wouldnt be opportune, as i dont have an enclosure atm that i can use.

you are so helpful JM. i obviously wouldnt do it before trying the freezer trick, but the data stored on there is rather important. at least to me.

Yes, well. Just know in advance that there is some definite sticker shock involved.

I had an old WD die on me once, and I asked the same question around some forums. Someone had the same problem told me to give it a good dropping. He said it worked, and at this point I had nothing else to lose, so I held the drive about 1 to 2 feet from the floor, and dropped it. (hardwood floor)

Believe me or not, but it worked, long enough for me to pull what I needed off anyway, I think it died again a couple days later. Worth a shot.

If you give it to a data recovery place, they may fix it during "diagnostics." They usually tell you that they can get the data off of it when they have fixed the problem. If you get it back without paying the fee, they just delete the file table so you can't access the data.

Get the hard drive back and rebuild/restore the file table using testdisk. I've gotten the data from two different drives that way for only the price of initial diagnostics.

Hey if he's going to throw it away after trying everything else he might as well try this. It did work for me.

KOP_AOEjedi.

Someone told you to drop your hard drive because you are retarded, would believe it would work, and would do it.

The fact that it worked is some sort of freak miracle.

Or more likely: the drive actually was still working, he dropped it, and that caused it to die 2 days later.

Quite.

But as I said : DON'T THROW AWAY THOSE MAGNETS NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO.
