Ruthven has a new computer!!... and its broken

ok so for free, i got my mates 3 old - highly updated games machine. 2700 Hz, 512 RAM, 128MB nVidia, etc etc.

It didnt have a HD in it, so i took the old 40 gig HD from my old computer into the new one.

Problem 1: when we turned it on, computer makes long beeps . Turns out the ram was loose, so we fixed that.

Problem 2: it boots up into win98 (from my old HD) but starts updating all the drivers for the new hardware. We got bored and just restarted it.

Problem 3: We formatted the C drive /HD and booted up with the win xp cd.
after a minute, blue screen of death appears.

The hardware should be fine, the motherboard is actually fairly old so it shouldnt have a problem with an old HD.

The only thing i can think of is the data on the cd is corrupted, ie, the cd is scratched, hence the error?

Ideas? The sooner i get this fixed, the sooner i can upload the sg1mod onto a new super fast computer that enables me to edit the game twice as fast.

oh yeah. ps. the games design course is going well :)
Code:
if(getThingFlags(source) & 0x8){
  do her}
elseif(getThingFlags(source) & 0x4){
  do other babe}
else{

Well, first off, your processor should ideally be running about a million times faster than that, give or take.

Secondly, it might be the CD, or the HDD could be on its way out. Use a win98 boot disk and do fixboot and fixmbr.

You expect XP to run on something roughly as powerful as a 286?

Shouldn't having a course in game design require a computer to facilitate whatever you do in class?

I 286 would smoke something running that fast. I think you be better of with some kind of TTL logic configuration.

Wasn't the 286 somewhere around 2 megahertz? And then the 386 came as high as 8, and the 486 hit speeds as incredible as 16 megahertz.

486 maxed out around 100mhz actually. I had a 486 SX 66mhz and a 486 DX 75mhz myself :D

I think it's the RAM stick. I've a few friends who blew RAM sticks while they were loose.

Other than that, try again. Might have just been a false alarm. I had a blue screen once, and it's never come back.

As for your question ruth, it's probably a bad hard drive. But try putting the hard drive into something else, deleting the partitions on it, and try booting the XP CD again.

Never mind it worked!

Oh, and JK doesnt look very good because Dx 9c doesnt support AGP texture acceleration, so i have to rollback to before dx 9 ish.

What?

I've always had things working great with my DX9 cards. It's DX10 I'm worried about.

I've never had any issues with my AGP DX9c

Uh, yes, it does.

If it's not showing AGP Texture Acceleration as available then you need to update your motherboard drivers or your video card drivers.

PCI-Express was brand new when DirectX 9c landed. It 100% supports AGP cards and all their technologies.
