But seriously, every single Gateway I've ever seen or worked with/on has been a nightmare, so I've obviously gotten a little prejudiced towards them. :)

Yeah, avoid Gateway. And as for KOP, way to fail. Don't you work somewhere with computers? I'd expect build quality to matter if you knew what the hell you were talking about.

Also, if my MacBook has trouble, I drive to the apple store and get it fixed in a day or two. Good luck shipping that thing to ASUS and being without it for weeks, if not months. Also don't plan on any of your data being there when you get it back.

Well being that an apple store is over and hour drive from where i live, that doesn't really impress me. Also, did everyone miss the huge list of things the macbook LACKS other than the WHOLE EXTRA POUND AND A HALF? Are you guys wimps or something? There's no way an extra pound or two is going to matter.

Build quality is important, but its not going to be the deciding factor when what I paid for is barely more expensive (and not really considering I would have to buy windows to put on the mac) than the macbook, except with better everything.

By the way, I work with computers and digital presses... all of which are HP. So... lets just say I know that HP isn't great, but they do a pretty good job at supporting their products... (at least the $500,000 products we have)

I saw your list and realized it was dumb :ninja:

I routinely play TF2 on my mac. It's nowhere near the quality of playing it on my desktop, but i was expecting that since its a laptop :P

For the RAM: You want to upgrade? Easy! Also, ram is cheap right now. You dont need to buy windows. You could just get Crossover and install games like that.

but whatever

Like I said, you'll see come 6 months from now, when the "yay new laptop" wears off.

Besides, the huge list of things the other laptop has results in a significantly shorter battery life also.

you're right, an hour drive is much worse than shipping your laptop off and not having it for a month.

You guys are a tad bitter I think. That or product loyalists, which is worse.

I gave the mac a fair enough chance to speak its part based on specs and price. It doesn't compare. The End.

You have obviously vastly different priorities, as apparently you want a desktop on wheels instead of a laptop.

I personally wouldn't get a current-gen MacBook (Pro) because I hate glossy LCDs and the current keyboard design. I also wouldn't get one if I wanted to use Windows without needing a mouse all of the time, since double-finger-tap right-click doesn't work in Windows thanks to the less than amazing touchpad drivers, and tapping the button with two fingers on the pad is just awkward (ever tried to do a right-click drag this way? ugh).

(I have a last-gen MacBook Pro, so I'm not just pulling complaints out of my ***.)

I believe they just updated the firmware for the new MacBooks that fixes trackpad issues in Boot Camp.

Doubt it. Only firmware update I know of simply fixes an issue where clicks weren't always registering. Trackpad won't work well in Windows until they decide to write better drivers that actually include some features that standard PC touchpad drivers have had for many years (tap-to-click anyone?). Last driver update was in April I think.

Ah, well then I'm glad I use Parallels, everything works fine in there (I don't game unless on console so its ideal.)

I use VMware Fusion to mount my Boot Camp partition. I can use it in Unity view and run Windows apps side by side with OS X ones, or use Windows as normal but with OS X touchpad gestures and such. If I need performance (gaming) I can just boot into it.

Love VMware Fusion, totally changes the way you do things.

Next to a macbook id probably go dell or asus. My friends got a dell and it runs HL2 really smoothly.
Take that there and put it in here

Not sure about that. I'm pretty sure that all of us have owned PC laptops for a long time. Hell, I'm using an IBM right now that is the greatest computer I've had (aka never has had 1 problem) and I still recommend Macbook. I just bought a Netbook, I still recommend Macbook.

Don't know about the bitter part either, considering our suggestions were made trying to make you the happiest, lol

This is actually exactly what I'd want <_< Huge 17-19" desktop replacement and then a netbook.

Then again, I'm still using my Toshiba Satellite of 2.5 years that had 512MB of ram until like 2 months ago and which now has a battery life of about 30 minutes (so I took out the battery and run it on AC), has a broken "S" key (so I remapped Caps Lock to "s"), and is somehow still alive and kicking enough for me to work daily on it @_@

Doesn't Windows freak out when it sees different hardware when you really boot into it? Or does VMware emulate the Macbook hardware?

And if it hasn't been said, you can two-finger right click and two finger scroll in windows with boot camp.
2008-12-11, 11:55 PM #64
It's nice of you guys to provide this advice, but don't cram it down his throat when he's made it clear he wants something else...

I have a Dell XPS M1710. It weighs something like 9lbs, has a fairly short battery life, and usually is plugged in at my desk. I do not take it to class for notes, I do not take it out of my room to browse the web and check my email. I use it for modeling, gaming, rendering and, well, everything. I don't have a desktop PC. On occasion, I take it up to studio to use during class. I have never been bothered by the weight of it, by the low battery life, by the size, nothin'. And I've had it for over 2 years now.

Maybe Snake is like me, eh? A FOOL.

Wow those alienware laptops are more affordable than I would have guessed. I usually associate alienware with $3000+ pricetags.

You have to have two fingers on the pad AND click the button though. This means to do something like a right-click drag, you have to first put both fingers on the pad, then hold down the button, then take one finger off and start dragging, it's very weird. In OS X you can actually just tap the pad with two fingers and that will register as a right click. I guess with the new pads it might be a little easier since they are the button, but I've only tried the new ones in OS X, not Windows.

Also, the two-finger scrolling in Windows is crazy hyper-sensitive and not nearly as fluid as it is in OS X. Even if you turn it down to scroll only 1 line at a time, it's still super-sensitive. Fact of the matter is, their touchpad drivers for Windows could use some work.
2008-12-12, 6:50 AM #68
You can actually just use 3 fingers on the new trackpad, but yes, the windows drivers for macbook trackpads are absolutely ridiculous.
2008-12-13, 11:31 AM #69
That's a main reason why I mostly just load my Boot Camp partition with VMware. Not having to reboot is super convenient, but so is having the track pad work properly. Only reason I really need to boot into Windows in games, and if I do that I'll be using a mouse.

I want a new macbook but can't justify the money, especially because my G4 Powerbook is still s***-hot.
