That's Playstation Home.

It's up now (well, actually it was up for 30 minutes then it crahsed), but it's officially released in beta form.

Anyone out there want to hang out in the home universe? Try playing some games or checking out apartments or something?

I never checked up on this Home thing but... wouldn't it best to just use a chat program?

Then again, if it's free, you can't go wrong.

Just downloaded it, then spent 25 minutes trying to get it to connect but with no luck. Why does Sony hate their customers? :(

Yeah it was up for like 30-45 minutes (after being delayed like 8 hours) and it's pretty much been down since. Apparently "some" servers work, others do not or something. Seems like alot of people can't connect.

Sony sure likes throwing away massive amounts of money. I can't imagine how much money they lose trying to run those servers for free.

Worst part is it doesn't even work :D

My friend had the beta.. I dunno I guess I'm not partial too it.. but he says in order to buy stuff in the game you actually have to use real money

Yeah, apparently.

Isn't Xbox the same way though?

You don't pay for any avatar content, no. Themes you can (although you can also use your own wallpapers), and gamerpics you can (although you can take your own avatar pic or webcam pic) buy, as well as the usual games/videos.
2008-12-11, 4:05 PM #12
from what i read there's alot of generic stuff for home that's free i'l have to see tonight when i check it out

and CM... avatar content is free now... but they plan on having options that cost money in the future

Well, Sony was always being criticized for a lackluster online experience, seeing how Xbox Live seems to be a successful feature of the 360. It could pay off in the long run if it caters to the laid-back crowd?

The laid-back crowd doesn't buy PS3's.
2008-12-11, 6:35 PM #15
Well then, I can't really understand Home's target audience. I always assumed the people who would use Home to socialize and meet people, decorate apartments and wander a lobby full of random people would be a more "laid-back crowd". I mean, I use consoles to play games so something like Home seems completely counter-intuitive to the gaming experience.

Home must been a substantial investment of Sony's to get it off the grounds after months and months of development so I assume it would have to attract many people to make it worth it. If it isn't for the "laid-back crowd," then who?

I had the closed beta back in November, but I never really checked it out much due to lack of times and games that I wanted to finish. After finals are done, maybe I'll give it more of a look.

Just tried it again... still nothing.

WOW THAT LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH FUN I WISH I HAD A PS3
2008-12-12, 1:18 AM #21
Well now that I've basically done everything.
Home is not nearly as fun as I would like it to be.

When I can put a working stereo or TV streaming movies on my PS3 in my club or apartment, or when I can buy better apartments, then I'll be happy.
For now, I can buy a square room with 0 view and put tables and sofas and plants in it.
Whoop dee fricking doo.

On that note:
Massassi has a clubhouse in HOME. Ask me for an invite.
It's called the MassassiCommunitsPrty

They should give the ability to kill people in Home.

And rob apartments.

you can stack furniture in home too.. i have 3 sofas stacked on top of each other in my apartment

and i was in the clubhouse when veger was setting up the furniture... if someone drops a bit of furniture on top of the couch you are sitting on it knocks you off the couch... and can make it so you are standing on a table

i've been everywhere but the 2 farcry 2 locations and there's one door in sully's bar where i have the keypad number but then some weird thing comes up so i haven't been in whatever room that door leads to

the free clothing options are even more limiting than xbox live avatars
complete lack of beard options
deviating from the preset character customization options tends to result in either neanderthal or mutant
you can save a handful of custom characters and switch to them at any time and this include all customization options including gender (walk around as a girl and when some dude starts hitting on you switch to male)

clothing seems to all be $.49
furniture prices range from $.49 to i believe i saw something that was $1.99
the summer house is $4.99
there's nothing in the "stuff" store yet

the central plaza has a game called "saucer pop" in the middle (walk up to the big pond thing) not very fun
there's a music area where people can vote on music to listen to

the theater is pretty boring... just movie trailers and music videos

the bowling alley has pool tables, bowling, and arcade games the problem with this is when i was in there everything was occupied

the mall has shops and a few chess tables upstairs so unless you're wanting to invite a friend to a game of chess or intend on spending real money on stuff for home there's nothing here to do except stand around messing with people or drop a bubble machine and start dancing

sully's bar (the location from uncharted) is just a couple rooms with seats and 3 doors with keypads upstairs door codes are 41675 for the left door (video room which shows a looping generic video) 21342 for the right door (artifact room where they have all the artifacts from the game) downstairs door code is 1024 but i have no idea what the bit that pops up is all about
there are some arcade games in there but it was super crowded when i was there and they were all occupied

to answer one question before it gets asked... no you cannot decorate your apartment or summer home with the trophies you have earned in games
eat right, exercise, die anyway

Looks like this will get about as much use as my PS3 does anyway when I'm not watching a blu-ray movie or playing Rock Band 2...
