Best IM client...?
2008-12-18, 5:02 PM #1
For the past few years I've been doing my computing on a Mac, so there never really was a question of which client to use; Adium wins hands down.

However, very recently I've decided to pick up a netbook for my portable computing, on trips and taking it to the classroom and such. Now, it's not that I haven't used Windows in the past few years, but the frequency has been rare. So basically, I'm back on Windows right now with the netbook.

I currently have Pidgin installed for chatting, which seems to be very utilitarian, a positive I think for a netbook. However, I don't love it. I'm just trying to gage the opinions of you guys, see what you use, why you like it, etc...

I pretty much stopped using AIM in 8th grade, text messaging is the new IM.

I use AIM because everyone I know uses it and it has all the functions I need, like... talking to people.
DO NOT WANT.

Yay netbook

I use Disgby, but it seems a bit heavy and I haven't tried it on a netbook yet. Why not trillian?

When I used linux full time I stuck with Pidgin. There's also a Pidgin fork called Carrier (har) that looked promising, might be worth checking out. Wikipedia sums it up best:

Basically, the devs listen to their users when it comes to feature requests and such, so in theory it should be better.

I use pidgin the most, but when on Windows, use DIGSBY.

I've been using Trillian for a long time, but due to ghosts on my system it takes forever just to close a blasted window. I tried Pidgin, but graphical glitches kept it invisible. Although Pidgin works without any problems on my linux box.

Digsby is by far the best IM client for Windows.

The second best is Pidgin. Pidgin uses a bit less RAM than Digsby, which is it's only real advantage. For me, Digsby takes about 20-30 MB to manage 3 IM accounts plus Facebook and Gmail. Pidgin would take about 10-20 to manage those same 3 IM accounts, and nothing else.

Digsby is less secure than pidgin

MirandaIM is great for a full-featured, minimalistic client.

As far as IM clients go, I found pidgin to be rather lame honestly. It doesn't have many useful features to it. At least not ones I actively use when I DO "im".

I used the PortableApps version of Pidgin for a long time as I could bring it to work on my keychain.

Now I just have a Bitlbee + Irssi server running in a Screen session at home that I can SSH to from anywhere. So much simpler.

I'd never heard of Digsby before this thread, though. Interesting..
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

I messed with that myself, but I never really found it practical for me.

For me at least, I tend to bounce around between three or four computers throughout the week, so it's handy to just be able to ssh to one place instead of trying to keep synced up between them.

Plus it means I never have local logs on my laptop for TSA to try to find. >.>

Sure. I do the same with irssi, but most of my IMing is from my laptop, so it's more convenient in my case to just use Pidgin. :)
