1991 Camaro Z28, Tuned port fuel injected 5.7 liter V8, runs like a champ. Needs a little TLC, and it has that bit of damage on the front right corner that you see. I'll give it a tune up then flip it, have no real need for the car, I just couldn't pass on the deal. $900!

You people are no fun. I was hoping somebody would call me on this. I own two Trans Ams, one of which easily qualifies in the "top ten redneck cars ever" catagory.

I love the F-body. I was within hours of getting an '02 Trans Am. They were detailing and fixing it up before they were ready to put it on the lot, and I was in need of a car more immediately so I went with the close-second WRX (I always knew the T/A was the worse of the two, practicality-wise, but I was more than entranced enough to forget it).

I'm really glad I bought what I did, but those cars are beautiful.

Was that what Knightrider was or was that a Pontiac Firebird?

They didn't sell them here.
nope.

The Trans Am was the top package on the Firebird. It had the V8. You could also get the V8 in the Firebird Formula, sans the Trans-am body-styling (and possibly some suspension upgrades, I forget). The Formulas tended to be a bit lighter, and could be had without the T-tops for chassis stiffness.

There was also the Firehawk, my favorite.

The Camaro was the same basic car, so there were usually models of that that correlated (though I think they dropped the Formula-equivalent base V8 at some point).

edit: also, yes it was the Knight Rider car: '83, I think.
edit again: The Z-28 he has equates to the Trans-Am.

No, the Knightrider was a human. :P

The car, KITT, from the original series, however, technically was both. That's because Trans Ams are Firebirds. Not all Firebirds are Trans Ams though. KITT was a third generation F-body (the car platform shared with the Camaro in the OP) which ran model years 1982 through 1992. The best example of which, in my opinion, is the '89 Turbo Trans Am or Trans Am GTA. To me, that style in a well maintained car still holds up well today.

My Trans Ams are a 1979 Black Special Edition, a slightly updated version of the car that appeared in the classic Smokey and the Bandit (RIP Jerry Reed whom passed away in 2008), and a white 2000 WS6. Both have been posted in various car threads here over the years.

You are mostly correct. Mechanically there was no difference between a Formula and a Trans Am. The weight savings was due to the lack of trim you cite and various different interior pieces. There was an additional 1LE option that deleted AC, power locks/windows, radio (if memory serves), etc. for even greater weight savings. Hard tops were available on both until the option was phased out. Initially the Formula was the way to get the best performance for less money. At the end is was basically the same as the Trans Am with different bumpers and rear wing.

The 1992 Firehawk was the most impressive and expensive. After that it basically just became a ram air package and was made obsolete when Pontiac started installing essentially the same package calling it the WS6 (Ram Air) option (WS6 had been around for a long time as a brake and suspension package, my '79 is a WS6 as well). The Firehawk was still a viable car with styling that set it apart from both the ram air and standard versions.

Just FYI for those that are interested.

Hurrah 3rd-gens! Got a new ecm for mine today, finally able to get ALDL info out of it again.

I'm impressed by the 3rd gen knowledge around here. The car is NOT a 1LE, however it does have J65 4 wheel disk brakes, G92 Performance rear axle (3.23 ratio), and N10 dual catalytic converters, 3 rather rare performance options that separate it not just from most other 3rd gens, but even most other Z28s. It's a very desirable car in it's market. Even half the Z28s didn't have the 5.7 but rather the ******* child 5.0.
