California tax conundrum...

Has anyone followed this interesting course of events?

certain members of the California legislature sought to raise taxes by circumventing the state constitution including a 10% hike in sales tax a 2% increase in state income tax and raising the gas tax... just what we need going into a recession...

La Times story

fortunately the governor pledged to veto the bill...

How about the NY tax fiasco..

this blind idiot is taxing everything he can possibly find to tax. They're even taxing music downloads now. Oxygen will be next more then likely. The new NYS tax rollout will revenue 4.5 billion anually. As if we aren't already the richest state in the US, this is just insanity. God damned democrats, I need to move.

I think rather than trying to squeeze every last bit of revenue from us, governments need a mechanism whereby they can minimize their operations in order to balance the budget.

If the money isn't there, it's not there. Stop crying about it and cut something out.

After all, it's the government's fault that our economy is a cycle of bubbles and bursts. It doesn't have to be that way if the government would install a sane economic system, but it refuses, so the government should deal with the consequences of its ineptitude.

Some of these agencies really need to open their books before the Governor starts taxing the hell out of us. I have a hard time believing that governments aren't hurting for money because they waste it.

Example: the 4 bridges on Staten Island have $8-$9 tolls on them. The other bridges and tunnels in the city are similar. And that's just for cars, not commercial. The average daily crossing on the Outerbridge Crossing is 90k. I'll halve that since you only pay the toll one way. They should be taking in roughly $131.4 million a year, even assuming none of those crossing are trucks (that pay a good $30 to cross depending on how many axles they have).

That's just one bridge. And then they raise taxes to pay for infrastructure? Where is all that revenue going?

In California, toll money is used to fund highway and road projects.

The real issue is that tax revenue is down because of the slumping economy but the democrats don't want to cut spending. Same bull**** happened 5-6 years ago.

Of course, given the situation, it's not going to be possible to solve this issue without there being some kind of tax increase, which the republicans refuse to do.

The whole situation blows. Politics blows.

Yeah California is failing in every measure we can. I bet we are the laughing stock of the Union and we deserve it. Oregon and Washington hate our guts because we're ruining their way of lives. Arizona is taking our businesses because it's cheaper there and more revenue for them. Nevada's doing the same thing.
