No, but I have sisters and a mother and Christmas is coming.

Guaranteed delivery by Christmas, btw. :awesome:

I never understood the appeal of diamonds. Is it because they are shiny? :v:

It's because they are expensive and girls love to brag about them.

Most likely. No matter how old girls get, we can't resist anything sparkly.

That's a lie. One time I put glitter on my wangdoodle and it didn't make any difference

Okay, so I literally lol'ed. Nice.

After seeing the movie Blood Diamond, I will never make a diamond purchase ever in my life.

If I ever must buy an engagement ring, it will be a ruby or a sapphire.

The difference being that rubies don't help fund a war that take children as it's soldiers.

Yeah, whatever. You wear hats made in Bangladesh, shirts made in Indonesia, Nike shoes, all by children. Nearly any Disney or Nike product you can buy was made by a child in a dank factory somewhere.

If I could get a "conflict diamond" for cheaper than a "conflict-free diamond", I'd go that way.
2008-12-22, 8:32 AM #14
Wasn't the origin of the diamond a big marketing scheme? Like some guy made the public realize they were worth more than they were worth. I forget. I read some article about it online.

I wear nothing but fairtrade clothing. I also own many articles of clothing made in the US.

In case you are wondering, fairtrade means that the people who made the product were given a fair price for what they made, and they worked in a comfortable environment that wasn't a sweatshop.

Casting a generalization is a stupid thing to do my friend.

Generalizations have their place; if you are as humanitarian as you claim (which I doubt), you are in an extremely small percentage of the population, making my generalization quite acceptable.

A stupid generalization is "all Mexican people are brown and fat". Sure, I bet there is a large amount of truth, but it's not extremely accurate.

A generalization that is not stupid would be something like "all cars have engines." Sure, I bet there are a very few cars with no engines, but they are far from commo, and make up a very small percentage of the population of automobiles.

Being an uptight prick is a rude thing to do, my friend.

This thread isn't about "generalizations". It's about diamonds.

The reason I'm not buying diamonds isn't because of the mining conditions, it is because of what the funding goes to. I don't want some rock a malnourished child dug out of the ground and received no profit for on my wife's finger. That's just sick.

And I appreciate the prick comment. When you are ready to act like a real person, come on down from your pedestal.

Well then you don't want any precious stone, becuase chances are it came from a place where conditions were HORRIBLE.

Especially sapphires.

I guess it's just a weird vibe I get when it comes to diamonds. They just make me uncomfortable.

I wish precious stones and metals were used more in every day applications instead of making expensive pretty for stupid shallow people.

Hey, our site guys use diamond drills all the time: If you're drilling into reinforced concrete you're likely to hit steel (even if the drawing says there shouldn't be any where you're drilling).

Is that good enough for you? :D

No.

I want diamond edged shaving razors, affordable ones!

Nokia Vertu.

And I just knew as soon as diamonds were brought up someone would come whining about blood diamonds and funding wars and how we need to eat grass and live in the trees, etc etc etc.

I don't care who digs up the shiny.

What I care about is how marked up it is so shallow people can get ripped off thereby screwing the rest of us that would enjoy practical applications.

Yeah I gathered that, I was referring more towards petmc20.

Diamonds are overrated. Corundum is rarer, prettier, and stronger. (Diamonds are not strong. They are HARD. There is an immense difference.) So buy ruby and sapphire instead.

Incidentally, for Rob, it's only the colored and pure corundum that is used for gemstones. The vast majority of it (The not so rare at all part) is gray and ugly, and used for all sorts of things. It makes much better sandpaper than sand, for example.

Although we do have strange and degenerate accents, we say New York normally. Its Long/Statten islanders that say it funny.
