Problem with my USB!!
2008-12-28, 2:18 PM #1
Hey, i had a complete computer meltdown yesterday, and I am still trying to fix everything. I have run into a big problem though.

Here's what happened.

I was scanning in my Auto registration and Drivers license for proof of state residency for my college tuition.

As soon as the scanner was finished scanning, the file appeared on my desktop. I opened it in windows picture viewer.. it loaded.. I looked at it for a split second. My monitor went black, and my computer began to reboot.

Once it came back up, my USBs were useless. Anything I connect to my computer, (phone, camera, printer, scanner) it says "USB device not recognized!" I tried doing a system restore, but it didn't help at all.

Anyone know what is wrong and how I can fix it?

sounds like a hardware problem, if you have a knoppix disc handy you can boot from that to confirm.
gbk is 50 probably

I read somewhere you have to "de-charge" as they put it, the mobo. When this happens to me I unplug the power cord from the powersupply and wait about 20 seconds, plug back in and turn her on. Never fails me. Give it a shot.

And this post is completely uncalled for and contributes in no way towards the thread...

The first thing I'd look for is a blown fuse on the motherboard.

Shutdown your PC. Now physically disconnect it from the mains power supply. This apparently clears any residual power on the motherboard.

the term De-charge works fine to describe it. Oh no wait, I need a much more scientific and educated term to please you, forgive me! [http://www.kitchenroundtable.com/i/smiley/bow.gif]

Gotta watch out for those "idiots" with solutions that work, I tell ya!

yes, by disconnecting the computer from the power supply you will indeed DISCHARGE the capacitors and probably reset a fuse. congratulations on phrasing a possible solution to the problem in a profoundly stupid way.

Thank you Onimusha, that worked perfectly. As soon as I turned it back on, my computer started detecting all the devices! You're awesome!
