I just switched from KDE to Enlightenment and I looove it. The only thing I'm missing now is KLaptop, but I've written a few scripts and now I'm ok. All I have to get working is a battery checking epplet and I'm good to go. It's SO fast. It loads in about 3 seconds compared to about 25 seconds for KDE. Yeah, it's great. Soooo, Linux users, post your window manager.

Windowmaker. I'm happy with this, it beats the pants off KDE. Load time for me with WM is about < 2s after login. KDE on the other hand is pushing 20+. In addition, the default menus are text based, for which I have an unwholesome amount of love for, instead of those gaudy icons next to everything.

KDE on the desktop, Blackbox on the laptop. The laptop is a windows machine.

I used gnome for awhile, and I went back to KDe.

To me, Gnome seems a bit rough around the edges, while KDE is highly polished and organized.

KDE. I like my bloat. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]
Edit: I should make better use of the Gentoo DO_NOT_COMPILE option. I really don't need all these programs. I install, basically, whole packages to get 1 or 2 programs. (kdenetwork for remote desktop, kdemultimedia for Juk, kdeedu for KStars, etc.)

What's that one WM designed to clone the XP desktop in just about every way, yet still offer the unmatched customizability you see in many other WMs? The reason I kept going back go KDE was for all the small nuisances that I was used to in Windows, but I didn't like the bloat. I bookmarked the page for it but have since lost that bookmark list.

I always thought Gnome felt more highly polished [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] I switched from KDE to Gnome not to long ago. I don't think I'll be going back. Switching to Gnome made me discover a nice program too: Rhythmbox. I love it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I also switched from Gentoo to Fedora Core 2. For some reason my /home partition (ReiserFS) decided to corrupt and all the fsck'ing in the world couldn't fix it. I didn't feel like spending another 2 days installing Gentoo again. I got "apt" installed under Red Hat yesterday, I'll try getting my 9600XT to work today. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that it won't be much harder than it was in Gentoo (emerge ati-drivers [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]) but it doesn't look that way. Patches, modules, recompiles... argh! **** YOU ATI I HATE YOU!!!! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif] /spam

I understand and appreciate Gnome's attempt to make 'sensible defaults', but I really wish it wasn't so damn hard to customize the desktop behavior.

Why I use Gnome
  • Simplicity. I don't get lost configuring my desktop -- it works the way it should from the start, and I don't get drowned in options like I do in KDE.
  • Style. I just like Gnome's look and feel much greater than KDE's style. Clutter-free design, excellent art, AA fonts, and simple task-oriented apps. (Abiword, Gnumeric, and Rhythmbox + Sound Juicer jus to name a few)
  • GTK2. All most all the apps I use, such as the GIMP and GAIM, are coded for GTK2. GTK2 looks better than QT3 in my opinion, which looks more like windows. In addition, I really dislike KDE icons, although the Plastik theme is pretty smooth. The only KDE app I do use is K3B, and it is one of the better linux apps out there.
  • Glade-2. I like glade because it is a simple and easy way to code GTK2 apps that can easily be parsed by python and libglade (in my case)
  • Bugs. Well, at least one -- every time I use KDE it breaks sound on my whole system and my speakers give off a hissing - buzzing sound. I have never been able to repair it without a reformat.

Here is a screenshot of my Gnome Desktop.

Haha, I'm trying that now, it's really cool. Do you know how to reconfigure what the buttons at the bottom do? And does anyone know how to close or dock or do anything with WindowMaker Applets in E?

BV, i'm fairly sure you have to go muck through some of the configs in the theme. I just toggled it off though as it was kinda big.

And the epplets weren't terribly useful to me.

Right now I am trying out Slax, and Using KDE because thats what it comes with. I really like, VERY customizable, easy to use, and most of all, very sexy [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

..But than again I have nothing to compare it too.

I'm almost certain there's a plugin for gkrellm[2] which displays laptop power. That's one reason the epplets didn't appeal to me, most of what they did was a few lines in the console at most, or could be doine just as well in gkrellm.

I like the fact that in KDE, you can have each desktop have a different wallpaper, and even have it change wallpapers every so often. Gnome is nicer looking, in my opinion, but I wish it had that feature.
2004-08-17, 6:11 PM #27
You can do that in E, and i'm pretty sure there's a way in one of the *boxes as well [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]
