Thread about Majora's Mask.
2008-12-29, 2:32 PM #1
I blew off the dust of my N64 yesterday to have another run at Majora's Mask after years of not playing the game. I was really into it when I was younger, and I still feel that way. It seems the people I meet who had a N64 either really enjoyed the game or hated it. Flawed in several ways but something about it really "clicked" for me.

I recall that the 3-day time mechanic and how everything resets bothered alot of people. While it had a good number of rough edges, I honestly thought it was definitely more than a simple gimmick and pretty cool gameplay element. Sure, it forced people to move through the dungeons, but I never believed it was too much of a pressing matter, if of course you knew the special song. I'm aware MM had some significant problems such as having only 4 dungeons, generally shorter than OoT and having the majority of the models brought directly over from Ocarina's world (under the excuse of a "parallel universe") Despite that, for me MM felt like it actually tried something new and interesting as a sequel rather than just copy/paste from its predecessor.

So what did you think about Majora's Mask if you could remember? Love it or hate it? Meh?
Yeah, I know, the game is almost 10 years old.

I absolutely loved it (maybe even more than OoT ... although that might've been because I sucked at OoT and broke my game file by Gamesharking it so I had a bajillion heart containers and could fly and then I never really legitimately beat Ganon). I was addicted to it. I got every mask in the game. Couple's Mask was a huge *****, but ahh, the memories. Majora was nothing with the Fierce Diety Mask (literally: Z-target and mash "B" over and over) It was a great time in my childhood.

Then I took the completed game over to my friend's house to show it off, and by the end of the day, I couldn't find the cartridge. Then my other friend mysteriously turned up with a fresh new copy two weeks later. So I lost my entire game. Goddammit. I could never prove that he had stolen it, but if he had, why the **** couldn't he have just left the save file on there :( I would've been less pissed off.

Best Zelda game ever. With the best dungeon ever. Water temple? Oh please, what a piece of cake. Topsy-turvy stone tower dungeon. Wow.

And, incredibly dark. You go around helping people, you get their masks... but then it resets. So, of course, you actually helped no one at all - unless you go and complete every mask quest in the last time span, right before going after Majora, you actually leave the place in ruins. Think about it for a minute. That weird guy with the keaton mask is still miserable, the fish ***** never gets to play her song, Talon still gets probed. And worse - everyone thinks you are the people you replace. The gorons all think you're Darunia, and the Zora's all think you're Mikal. But then you just up and vanish! They never even know that these people died - they're just GONE.

Probably the saddest thing in that game is the mommy mummy on the way to the last dungeon. :(

Yeah, it was a dark game indeed. I loved it. Took the longest time for me to beat 100%.

I was under the impression that the Skull Kid was responsible in some way or form with people's miserable lives. But the game seemed very vague about it. Skull kid or not, it was about time for a game to capitalize on the fact that life tend to suck.

The side quest with the couple took a long time to figure it out when I was young. There were specific times people went and did things and certain items required for this and that. I don't even remotely remember how things started off but I thought it was a neat little puzzle which took multiple trips to the past.

I liked it. The whole game had such a subtle and twisted undertone while maintaining the fairly lighthearted atmosphere of the others on the surface.

I like OoT better but MM was a classic

I probably enjoyed MM more than OoT. Both were incredible, but Majora's Mask had so much you could do. Plus, the five transforming masks changed up the gameplay completely. The dungeons were really creative. Plus, I really liked the main story. Each side quest really enwrapped you in each person's struggle. The wedding mask one was really good, though frustrating at times.

One big thing that made me enjoy MM was that since everything started over again, you could redo anything that you wanted. In OoT, once you hit the last save point, pretty much all you can do is catch ghosts or fight Ganondorf.

I loved it.
Getting all the masks was fun. Shooting that big bird to get the huge orange rupee never got boring.
I had most fun getting the couples mask. It also took me a few attempts to get it too. First time, I forgot to wear the stone mask. Second time, I didn't make it on time through one of the door. Third time, I got it.
My second favorite mask was the Moo Moo mask, which also took time to get too.
It also took me a while to notice that the Happy Mask Salesman had a lot of masks resembling very familiar characters such as Mario and that guy from the Marvel Comic.

I'd love to play this game again, but I don't have an N64 anymore. Is this game sold on the Wii Marketplace?

I haven't seen it. But you can get copies of it ported to the gamecube. Unfortunately, they crash. A lot.

Think I've still got this and me old N64. I never completed it as I'd got a non official expansion thing and it overheated. I did get an official one but never went back to Majoras.

Did anyone bother getting the faerie's sword?
That one took me forever.

I tried but Graham Norton wasnt having any of it

i want MM to come out on the VC. Because the GCN port is buggy, and I dont want to have to buy a used N64 for a single game (as all the other N64 games that I like, with the exception of banjo kazooie, which I can live without, are already out on the VC, and I have already got for it).

But yeah, MM was a fantastic game. So much stuff to do in it, and better graphics than OoT (due to requiring the RAM expantion or whatever that red thing that goes into the console is called), it also has great music. (I have the OoT, MM, and two OoT remix soundtracks)

Heh, I also have been reliving my N64 days, completing my past collection as well.

Mario Kart, 007, Perfect Dark, Rush 2, Killer Instinct Gold, Blast Corps, Banjo-Kazooie.... numerous others.

Yes. I got every item in that game. Every upgrade. Every mask. Everything. :psyduck:

I liked MM better than OoT.

But as for the gamecube port, it works just fine. I have the Zelda Collector's gamecube disc, which is

Zelda NES
Link's Adventure
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask

ALL ON ONE DISK. For only 20 bucks at Funcoland. Best purchase I ever made :awesome:

It has NEVER crashed on the Gamecube, which rocks. A couple of differences though.

-The Epona in Clocktown glitch was removed.
-The Fierce Diety Glitch outside boss battles glitch was removed
-Dawn of the first day, Clocktown has a small amount of lag.

Other than that, perfect.

Oh, and MM was a ****load harder than OoT.

:( It crashes all the time for me.

Yeah, that special Gamecube disc? I have it. I don't recall it crashing for me either.

Use a non-linty cloth and alcohol based cleaner? Remember to wipe from the inside to the outside, not in circles.

It has nothing to do with the disc.

It has everything to do with it running in an emulator.

Majora's Mask represents the absolute limit of the n64 hardware. They employed all sorts of non-portable tricks. The crashing is in the buggy emulator nintendo crammed onto the gamecube disc to run the thing.

i just thought I would let all of you know that I have not played this game.

It has to be your disc or a flaw in your Gamecube, since it works just fine for me and ZZter with no crashes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Collector%27s_Edition

Quote:
Collector's Edition contains complete emulated versions of The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask.[1] Because the games are emulated rather than adapted for the GameCube, there are some technical errors and glitches in Majora's Mask. Many have complained that Majora's Mask unexpectedly crashes or freezes occasionally because of emulation mistakes, though this can be reduced by disabling the rumble feature. The game can also suffer from lag in certain areas, most notably in Clock Town, and inconsistencies in the audio.[2]

I always thought it would be cooler if you could use the final mask outside of boss battles. I know there's a glitch, maybe I should give it a try.
