The third largest industry in this country is about to be dealt a horrible blow by the government. We're about to turn our recession into a depression in the name of 'protecting' our children.

Like the article stated though, major toy companies will not be affected. Therefore it won't cause any kind of depression, but a possible increase in jobs.

It will suck for private buisness owners, yes. Although, I haven't heard of someone making their own toys since the 1800s. Every toy shop around here who isn't a Toys R Us or Wal-Mart is still selling major brand toys rather then making its own. I believe the same can be said for most other places around the US nowadays.

It is rediculous though. America the Dystopia. Hmm.. I wonder why?

Our economy runs on small business. Those big companies don't employ Americans to manufacture things anymore. Now everything will be made in China... when it was China's shoddy safety standards that caused the problem in the first place.

^^ This makes my post irrelavent. :saddowns: ^^

I bet you the AFL-CIO had a big hand in making sure that this bill passes. It would benefit them greatly. Small businesses are not unionized.

This is the biggest doom and gloom blog post ever made. First off, the bill is only in place so that they can punish those who do bad things. If minor toy manufacturers don't comply (Which they likely don't even have to, it looks like a major part of this bill is exemptions to certain states and industries), there will likely be absolutely no recourse taken.

Yes, the bill sucks in it's current form, but it will only be used in a punitive way, and it will happen very rarely (When there's a public safety issue, they can find the source and sue them back to the stone age). There's thousands of bills like this that are unenforceable, and have no actual impact on the economy.

So how many Americans does a "stay-at-home mom selling beautiful handmade rag dolls" employ. Very sad story, for sure. But I'm not really sweating this thing out. Just because small businesses are important to the American economy does not mean that *all* small businesses are important to the American economy.

This is not to say I agree with the law. Neither one of the articles you cite even claims a big economic impact from the law. They just point out that some really good toys will no longer be available and some people that make those toys will be hurting. That is bad enough in itself. I don't see the point of exaggerating the economic impact to the level of the whole economy.

heres an easy fix... label all handmade toys as ages 16+ even if its a teddy bear.

Yeah, it would be impossible to police every single yard sale or flea market for dangerous toys. The market is just too big.

I don't care what those stupid swedish bastards think.

Each individual piece is a lego, and that makes a **** ton of them a bunch of god damned legos.
2009-01-03, 3:30 PM #15
They're dutch and it's called a Lego Brick.

:colbert:
nope.
2009-01-03, 3:31 PM #16
**** the dutch, what did they do that was so great. Stick their fingers in dikes?

Face it, the only thing they did noteworthy were LEGOS.
2009-01-03, 3:32 PM #17
If its a regional difference, they're definitely legos here.

It's technically LEGO Bricks. I don't have a link handy, but LEGO execs say so.

In a quasi effort to return to the topic, am I reading this right (been drinking)? The gov. is going to implement ridiculous internal standards because China can't get their **** together?

That seems to be their idea, yes.

A better idea would be to stop outsourcing and create more american jobs.. but nooo.. that would never work.

I agree with Pommy. It's nice that Lego has decided to make "Lego" plural, but in common usage, it IS "legos"

If you say "I had so much Lego when I was a kid" instead of "I had so many Legos when I was a kid" you are a rat *******.
2009-01-04, 2:43 PM #34
I've never heard anyone say "legos"
I've always used lego as the plural to lego.
"I had so many legos" sounds so bizarre.
