On a related note (it's from Macworld not CES but it's in the spirit of unveilings), Apple releases the MBP 17" for $2800 base configuration.

I hate apple just about as much as I love the Onion. These are both very large numbers, people.

New 17" MacBook Pro sounds nice... Till you find out that you can no longer easily get to the battery, hard drive, or memory. And they charge you $50 extra for a matte display now... Something that used to be a standard laptop feature.

It is nice that iTunes will be offering DRM free music in the near future. That is long overdue.

Not that it matters a lot to me, as I don't use iTunes, but they shouldn't have forced DRM files in the first place.

Why would you need to get to a battery that has an 7-8 hour charge? And unless they shifted things around, the HD and RAM is ridiculously easy to replace on the newer MacBooks.

Amusingly enough I remember when the standard practice was to charge extra for glossy screens hahah

Glossy screens are a gimmick. They are less color-accurate and have terrible glare even in modest lighting conditions.

TV tuner in a netbook/laptop? lolwat?

First of all, is it even going to be a digital tv tuner, as analog broadcast stops in like a month, second, how are you possibly going to use a digital tv tuner without an aerial on the roof? this would literally only work if you are like out in a field standing on a hill.

That's just a really pointless feature that will add to the cost of what is supposed to be a minimal-cost gadget.

I want Eee PC with 3G network.

Umm, my digital tuner is built into my TV and I get digital channels just fine.

Screw the TV tuner (although as noted it'll work perfectly fine as an on-the-go/quick TV tuner when you're walking around in the middle of the city or something and need to catch local news or whatnot) ... the important thing is that it's a netbook-sized tablet which is pretty much exactly what I've been waiting for for school.

And omg there is a 10-inch version and they fixed the stupid keyboard/shift key thing! Asus is on a freakin' roll.

I think some of them already do or will / there are a ton of netbooks with 3G chips in em right now (e.g. HP Mini 1000, Acer Aspire One)

Where do you live? Is your tuner connected to an antenna on the roof?

In Canada, digital channels are broadcast at a very weak signal. In urban areas, it is impossible to get a signal without an antenna (on the roof). I get stronger signal from some Buffalo TV stations vs some Toronto stations, and I live in Toronto.

I live in Fargo, ND, and no, it's not connected to any outside source. I bought the TV, turned it on and started receiving digital channels just fine. Maybe you're right about it being different elsewhere, but a built-in tuner works fine here.

Yeah, it should work just fine... The antenna is probably built into the screen housing like most WiFi antennas, and the screen of a laptop is about the right size for a UHF antenna (most DTV stations are broadcast on UHF instead of VHF).
