Windows 7 Open Beta
2009-01-09, 2:22 PM #1
Just FYI in case you didn't know, MS is offering free downloads of Windows 7 Beta (build 7000)

64-Bit version:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/633118BD-6C3D-45A4-B985-F0FDFFE1B021/EN/7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULXFRE_EN_DVD.iso

Their site is sorta getting hammered right now so you'll have to snatch the Product Key from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/ later

Quote:
Due to very heavy traffic we’re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I’ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!

I don't think it looks much different?

I think Aero looks nice, but I always thought the Aero Unified theme is much better.

How to Deal with the MP3 issue ?

MP3 files
When MP3 files are added (either manually or automatically) to either the Windows Media Player or the Windows Media Center library, or if the file metadata is edited with Windows Explorer, several seconds of audio data may be permanently removed from the start of the file. This issue occurs when files contain thumbnails or other metadata of significant size before importing or editing them. To avoid this, take the following steps:

To protect your MP3 files

1. Before you install this Beta release, back up all MP3 files that might be accessed by the computer, including those on removable media or network shares.
2. Install the Beta release of Windows 7; then install this update (KB961367);;;;;;
You can download the 32-bit (x86) version here and the 64-bit (x64) version here.

So when this comes out for real, will all of us with Vista get free upgrades because MS seems to be intent on jumping ship on the OS so quickly? Doubt it, but it'd be nice.

Pommy, 16 GB of disk space?!!

I don't know much about tech stuff, but isn't that ALOT!?!
I got an external HD for christmas, but before that I had a 50 GB HD, and almost never did I have 16 free. That's crazy, 16gb, right?
2009-01-09, 6:09 PM #12
I just pasted that from the Windows 7 site but yeah. Apparently. haha.

You do realize a terabyte harddrive is like 100-120 bucks nowadays, right?

I got an external 1tb drive for $140 which is good I understand. So internals are probably in the price range you mentioned.

As long as you install the update before running WMP or using Windows Explorer to edit metadata on mp3s there shouldn't be a problem... I'm not going to back up all 10gb of my music just for this :O.

That is also the size of a typical Vista install. Theres a reason it ships on DVD.

Since you're all basically computer manufacturers yourselves, I had a question regarding this beta.. I have heard about a program called Partition Magic that can create a partition of an existing point in your HD without a format or anything.

Can I create a partition with this program (as I have been told I can do) and install the WIndows 7 Beta to that partition of the same HD my current Vista is installed to? After this, will it automatically give me the option to choose which one to boot into when I restart or do I have to change some other settings? Also, when the beta runs out and I uninstall this, will everything automatically go back to normal as it currently is now (meaning I just reboot and boom - into vista she goes without having to select anything, etc)?

Yeah... the beta sucks so far. Networking drivers are broken and don't work. I think it somehow broke my DVD drive (?!?!) and of course like Vista the DVD totally screws up your bootloaders without you needing to install Windows off of it.

Mega, every single thing I've seen about the beta says the exact opposite of what you're encountering.

It is Beta after all :(
2009-01-10, 2:27 PM #30
I got it running on my MacBook Pro with little trouble. Only thing I had to do special was install the Realtek audio drivers afterwards cause the Bootcamp audio drivers didn't work for some reason. Haven't really used it much though since it's not all that different from Vista.
2009-01-10, 2:31 PM #31
I've snatched it but haven't installed it on anything yet since my laptop is XP and I can't do an XP->7 upgrade :(

And I'm hesitant to install it over Vista on my primary/HTPC.

Yeah after reading the stuff in the installation guide about Microsoft not guaranteeing that it won't wipe your hard drive or something, plus you have to revert to a previous version or buy the new version before August 1... no thanks. Not worth my time and effort.

No... that's pretty much my experience so far. Still no luck getting networking to work.

And apparently for some reason this single DVD-RW I accessed with a DVD-ROM drive in Windows 7 no longer works in Windows XP on the same computer, but works fine in other computers. W. T. F.

Even by todays standards a 320GB is small. lol

I got it when I was still in High School, so it's an older computer, Dell Inspiron 8600.
Edit, I just googled it, and it appears most of them game with a 40GB hd, I guess I got lucky.
(Sgt. Kabuki Man is playing on G4 soon, Troma rocks, and you should all check it out right now. This didn't warrent a thread, so I'm throwing it in here because I found it out as I posted here)

So apparently MS is going to be "giving out free updates (upgrades?) to Windows 7 after July for new machines you purchase". This could be totally false, though ... I read it on some forum and the guy could be just making it up.

It certainly looks like **** but then Microsoft isn't really known for their design. Maybe I'll give it a shot once I do another backup.

Vista has tools on it that you can use that actually work better than Partition Magic does. Partition Magic was created in the days of windows 98/2000 when that kind of **** was extremely sketchy to attempt.

Look it up and I'm sure you'll be able to hunt down something like what I'm talking about.
