The Best Special Infected Ever is the Hunter
2009-01-11, 9:49 AM #1
This is the hunter megathread for 2009...January...11th. Because we need new megathreads about the hunter every day. After enabling cheats and playing as infected single player, I decided that hunters were a pretty good choice. I didn't die quickly as a smoker and I didn't magically get pushed when trying to be a boomer. And tanks were curiously slow, which is funny because I remember when I play on the survivors side, the tank usually catches up with you unless he picks up a rock or you go behind cover like a train cart or a barn. Anyways, the hunter is the best class for Left 4 Dead.

A rare look into the hunter, obviously taken with cheats enabled

Now we all know that each special infected has their vice. The Boomers are obviously obese people before becoming infected. The Smokers were...smokers. The Tanks were just the opposite of Boomers, but still just as unhealthy, by being the people that injected theirselves with steroids. That's why their legs are small, you see. And the witches were just scared girls concerned with their looks or something, I don't know.

"Please don't leave me, Zoey! I love you!"

But the hunter is the best out of the vices, since he was most likely a drug dealer, or ex-boyfriend of Zoey, being upset after they broke up because he was infected or something. Honestly, I don't know. All I know is out of all the special infected, hunters are the best. I mostly associate with hunters because I always like to crawl really slow at first, then jump an extremely long distance and shred someone to pieces, looking cool doing it too. At least in my mind.

A hunter is obviously trying to prove it can jump longer and faster than a train going 60 km/h

So in this thread, please talk about how awesome the Hunter is.

Did you say boomer?

How do you enable cheats to play sp as infected?

Played through Blood Harvest last night with Fuzz. Man, playing campaigns with actual other players instead of AI survivors is intense. The game definitely ups the difficulty a notch when you're doing well.

The hunter is the most useless class on online play. There's a reason it disproportionately spawns more hunters than other classes. The only way a hunter can do any damage is to camp all day hoping for someone to be left behind. If the survivors are a good team, you have absolutely no way of doing damage to them.

Tanks are obviously the best, especially if there are cars around. A tossed car will insta-kill any survivor that is even touched by it. Boomers work beautifully in open areas, if they can get in for the hit. If there's no corner for the survivors to back into, they will be forced to constantly spin around, ensuring lots of hits and leaving them open for other special infected to take advantage of. Smokers are somewhat opportunistic also, but like Boomers they can allow for ridiculous assists. A boomer + smoker can get someone killed in seconds.

I once saw a Hunter jump from the top of a fire escape, across the fenced parking lot, and into your jugular.

I was playing last night online and we were at the last level of No Mercy, and I was a boomer and managed to get up on top of the room with the minigun where all the survivors were; I vomited and hit two of them but then they shot me and it hit everyone; I lol'ed.

Then I spawned as a hunter and accidentally jumped off the building. Hunters suck.

Hunters are only fun to play when the survivor players are idiots.

Hunter kicks ***. The trick is team work. If you jump at a group by yourself, you're obviously gonna get screwed. If you attack at the same time as another hunter or a smoker or both, you can screw them up. Especially if there's a horde or they're boomed. Also: Melee. Melee a lot. When the survivors are standing in a corner or something (like the closet by the hospital elevator or against the wall in the Blood Harvest finale), run in there and take a couple swipes. Big damage, and you can hit more than one survivor at a time I think.

Boomer's my favorite though. I think in order, I like Boomer > Hunter > Smoker. Smokers are just too damn situational, and it's hard as hell to actually kill as a smoker.
2009-01-11, 12:58 PM #10
Yeah, that's kind of true. Experienced players will destroy any hunter that comes near them. You need to gang rape the survivors to be effective. Hit them with a boomer, then pounce and snare them while they are busy fighting off the horde.

Yeah. In most situations hunter and smoker are useless by themselves, unless there's a straggler or you're pulling someone off a roof or catching the last person to jump down into the cornfield. Boomers obviously work best with others, but really they should be just spawning, puking, and dying as soon as they can.

Figured out how to do it:

sv_cheats 1
director_no_human_zombies 0
press m, switch to infected
sb_all_bot_team 1
2009-01-11, 7:18 PM #13
An easier way is to put this:

Code:
sv_cheats 1
director_no_human_zombies 0
sb_all_bot_team 1
bind "F1" "z_spawn boomer"
bind "F2" "z_spawn smoker"
bind "F3" "z_spawn hunter"
bind "F4" "z_spawn tank"
bind "F5" z_add
bind "F6" "z_spawn witch"

As a file called custom.cfg in this location:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg

Once in a single player map, bring up the console and type this:

Code:
exec custom

And then press M to change teams, and the F1, F2, F3, or F4 buttons to spawn as the according Infected, listed above in the code.

I just played two single player campaigns as rombies, had a ton of fun. I wonder why they didn't make this a normal game mode. It wouldn't be that hard to do.

Balancing most likely.

Either that or it exists solely to test the AI director.
2009-01-11, 7:39 PM #16
Really the only thing I could see is that you can get to some places that you're not suppose to (above buildings to the point there's no textures). That can be fixed easily with invisible walls, or automatic teleport back near the group on the ground.

Try Tanks on the last bit of No Mercy.

Punching people off a skyscraper is :awesome:.
nope.

Depends on how much health the survivors have. At full health they can outrun a tank, and with level heads can evade all of his attacks. In Versus mode if they're hurt and thus can't outrun the tank, chances are they're gonna die.

Is this true??? I've always felt like I could never outrun one. Does the drop in speed come in increments, or is it linear?

the tank also gets slowed down when it's being shot, if you're just running from it then it's faster then if your running and shooting at it.

There's 3 speeds I believe.

If your health is green, you're running at fullspeed.

If your health is yellow, you're running a little slower, sort of limping.

If your health is red, you're seriously limping and a good bit slower.

A sidenote: You can take painkillers which have the added benefit of allowing you to run fullspeed while you are under their effects.
2009-01-12, 8:38 AM #23
Yeah painkillers are a lifesaver.
2009-01-12, 8:55 AM #24
Oh right forgot about shooting the tank slowing it, that probably is also required to outrun it.

Also auto shotty is the best weapon for taking out the tank, but you gotta be close, just try to not get too close or else he'll hurt you bad. [http://images.mzzt.net/smilies/emot-notawesome.png]

2009-01-12, 8:55 AM #25
Agree, 20 autoshotty shells in rapid succession take him down on everything but expert I think.
nope.
2009-01-12, 9:41 AM #26
The best way to kill the tank is to light it on fire and run away for 30 seconds. It's pretty much the only way to kill it on expert, unless it spawns far away and you have good vantage points that prevent it from getting to you quickly.

Amen to that.
nope.
2009-01-12, 10:04 AM #28
The best way to kill the tank is to have it be me, apparently; I spawned as one the other day and I'd never played as a tank before, and I only ended up doing like 20 damage because i was all like "how do you work this thing?" :downs:

The best way to play a tank is to knock someone in a corner, pummel them until they're downed, then when someone else comes to help, do the same to them. It's always entertaining to swipe a guy onto the floor mere seconds before they revive their friend. If you're feeling really special, let them revive the guy, but hit him before he can heal. If you can do that 3 times, they'll die (You can only be revived 3 times before you die, unless you use a medpack).

Of course, that only applies if there isn't a roof to blast them off of, or any cars to throw at them. Roof throws and car throws are insta-kills in almost every case.
2009-01-12, 10:42 AM #30
One of the most fun things to do is to beat the **** out of the hunter. When it pounces, when it's creeping around, when it's on a teammate, etc, to just smack it backwards and then advance, continuously bashing it until it's dead.

It's just really satisfying.

SO! I have yet to play versus (or expert) and I kinda wanna, any massassians playing anytime?
2009-01-12, 1:24 PM #31
I hate playing as the hunter. You have zero chance of survival if theres another human near the one you launch at. At least the smoker can be far away, or the boomer blurs everyones vision with puke and has a CHANCE to get away. It might not be a good one, but I don't even think there is a way to get OFF a survivor after you pounce on them, which is lame.

Like someone said earlier, hunters should almost always be "second-wave" classes. by that i mean, boomers and smokers should attack first, followed by hunters at the opportune time. for example, a typical successful order of attack is boomer -> smoker -> hunter, with the boomer semi-blinding everyone and calling the mob, the smoker disabling one from range, and the two other hunters disabling the friends that come and try to save the smoker'ed friend.

hunter can be pretty fun if you spam leap everywhere around the survivors. it keeps them on their toes, distracts them, and causes them to get closer together, while boomers get in a good position to vomit/splode all over them. also, pro tip: you can leap off of walls.
