It died on me. Not paying 500 dollars for a new motherboard.

Might as well save $30.

don't most disk drives have that nice little hole in the front where you can push in a paper clip and pop it open?

Will there be a funeral? If so, where? I can make arrangements soon. I never thought I'd attend a funeral for an iBook, but it sounds like it was such a nice laptop.

Also, cremate it and post the video.

Also, all you should need to remove to extract a cd drive from a laptop is the keyboard.

And that's like... four screws. No destruction required.
2009-01-11, 8:38 PM #16
I know this "little hole". But this was a drive where it "sucks in" the CD (slot-loading). There is no manual mechanism that would spit out the CD, if I recall.

It takes more than "four screws" to access anything on the iBook. I could have done it peacefully, but certain screws were stubborn, so why bother.

There is a way to trick slot-loaders into ejecting, but they have to be less dead than yours probably was.

Points for Echoman and MB. Commendations for all others.

Well then, the laptop's destruction was of no detrimental consequence.

[edit]Meanwhile, the more practical side of me is suggesting seeing if you can possibly hawk off some of the still-functional portions, like, say, the screen.

I was thinking about saving the screen, seeing it is still intact. And the harddrive (although nothing of value was on it). But not sure what to do with them.

Well, you could possibly see if anyone could buy them off of you. At worst, eBay for a few dollars; the screen's a real pain to get a replacement for if it's the part that dies on you.

Gah you wasted the opportunity for an overly elaborate and complicated method to get it out that a Bond Villain would have been proud of.

I'd find an iBook on craigslist/ebay with a broken screen for cheap and use it's motherboard.
gbk is 50 probably

Can I have the screen?
