Just bought this the other day. I haven't been able to go out and use it yet, but I'm sure looking forward to it. The second pic is of all the firearms I own.

And with an arsenal like JLee's, you do NOT want to loot this man's closet!

I'm actually picking up a hunting rifle next. The AR-15 is for fun/self defense, but I don't have a good hunting rifle. So I'll be getting a .270 or a 300 mag, depending on how I feel at the time.

Don't worry The_Lost_One, just cause it isn't in the picture, doesn't mean I don't have it. I bought 100 rounds of .223 to go with it.

Damn California gun laws, there are no AR-15s in my future. Not unless I get one with a "Bullet Button" and those huge ugly "Monsterman Grips".

CA assault rifle laws are complex, but to simplify, one cannot own a semi-auto, centerfire rifle if it has a detachable magazine and a pistol grip or one of many other features. One or the other, but not both.

Yet another reason why California sucks.

I don't like it, but it makes sense. There are a lot of people here, and honestly, no civilian really has a need for a semi-automatic assault rifle. I don't like it, but it's the law.
2009-01-14, 12:16 PM #23
Eh... tough decision between a lame bullet button and lame monsterman grips.

Am I correct in believing that if you have one you don't need the other?
2009-01-14, 12:17 PM #24
Yes, one or the other (in general; as I said, it's complicated).

If one has a bullet button, one can have any of the "evil features" listed in the blog post. Without the bullet button, a firearm cannot have any of the "evil features".

Evil Features:
California Penal Code Section 12276.1

(a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(1) a semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(a) pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(b) thumbhole stock.
(c) folding or telescoping stock
(d) grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(e) flash suppressor.
(f) forward pistol grip.

5469 (a) "detachable magazine" means any ammunition feeding device that can be removed readily from the firearm with neither disassembly of the firearm action nor use of a tool being required. A bullet or ammunition cartridge is considered a tool.

I'm somewhat familiar with Cali's suckiness in regards to firearm laws- that's the paramount reason I will never move there. However, there's nothing more deadly about an AR15 than a Mini-14, or any other semi-auto rifle without a pistol grip, flash suppressor, bayonet lug, collapsible stock, etc..

Flare launcher is on the list? WTF? They suck worse than I thought!
woot!
2009-01-14, 1:52 PM #26
Yeah, I know, the laws don't always make sense. I don't think deadliness is the concern, as much as ease of use and concealment.

Anyway, I'll trade not having an AR for 320 sunny days a year, and an average daily temperature of 75F. Barbecue, anyone?

It's got nothing to do with the firearm itself, it's about appeasing the masses trying to regulate "scary" looking weapons. There was a NRA video some time ago that showed taking the internals of an SKS or similar rifle (illegal, because it's scary looking to a moron) and placed them into a bland hunting rifle body. Zero change of functionality, complete change of legality.

Yep. Same thing with the (now-expired) Clinton ban.
