Police said Reese was unfamiliar with standard-shift cars, and she apparently turned the ignition key and removed her foot from the clutch – without realizing that the vehicle was in gear. The car lurched forward, went over a curb and crashed into the rear of the building and left Reese pinned in the door frame against an electrical box.

Reese, 26, of Hamilton, left behind a husband and three young children.

Nothing against you, Free, but that article (or it's sources) are BS. I've never encountered a vehicle than lurch over a curb, into a building, and have enough force to crush someone (presumably the driver!) from letting the clutch out. It must have been parked on a crazy steep hill or something.
2009-01-15, 8:42 PM #55
Letting go of the clutch without any pressure on the accelerator would make the car stall. If it was on a crazy steep hill it would have rolled when she took off the handbrake.
nope.
2009-01-15, 8:45 PM #56
Well, um, she's dead.

Like you, I've never known a manual to lurch forward too much when you let out the clutch while it's idling/in gear. It makes one hell of an unpleasant shudder, though.

It doesn't make sense at all, I agree. A) the car is obviously dead, so no acceleration. B), the car is still probably in gear (unless she shifted it into neutral) so the car isn't going anywhere even if it's on a hill. C) if you find yourself uncontrollably rolling down a steep hill, why wouldn't you apply the brake or the handbrake?

That's one hell of an epic fail. The only reason I had it in my clipboard is because I was wondering how she mananged to reproduce before removing herself from the gene pool.

If it was a sturdy diesel car it could've just carried on. Mine's actually very difficult to stall.

Or even if she just dropped the clutch in a vehicle with particularly large amounts of low-end torque. There have been one or two occasions where I've forgotten the car was in gear and dropped the clutch, and my little Saturn ION has gone about two or three feet. I'd imagine a vehicle with a bit more torque would be able to make it four or five feet, enough to get over a short curb and into a building.

As food types are listed by letter in a box that shows 2 columns, shouldn't they be arranged like:
Instead of:
Currently selecting “C” will jump to a point in the list that displays 9 items beginning with C and 9 items beginning with P instead of all items beginning with C
