If you use printscreen, the DVD image shows up as black in photoshop or MS paint or whatever.

Actually, it's not black. It's empty. If you have a video playing, with the photoshop window covering it, the black you see will actually be the video playing. You can move the window around to see different parts of the movie in the background!

Yeah, I would try the Print Screen thing, but get a blank viewer.

Windows (pre-Vista) uses a chromakey mask for the overlay. It's not black and it's not empty, but it's almost black. I think apps can use whatever color they want for the mask but I've never really done a lot with DirectShow.

Vista uses hardware compositing instead of an overlay.

You're right, I used to have TV tuners that used fuscia for some stupid reason (you could see the color bleed on the edges).
